singing a hymn during the ceremony?

FI and I are getting married outside on a mountain in Colorado.

We were trying to think of meaningful things to do during the ceremony but most of them are out because it'll just be people, rocks and some bushes haha no table to set anything on, no candles, no flowers, etc. I stumbled upon this idea where instead of having one person sing or read a passage, the whole congregation could join in and sing an old hymn.

Both FI and I grew up in church, and we thought it was a really neat idea. I'm just curious have any of you ever seen this? Do you have any suggestions for a good song to sing that most people would know?

What about this little light of mine, during the unity candle (if you're having one)? You could print out the words on your program so that those of us who only know the first verse

can join in.

We sang The Doxology (Praise God from Whom all blessings flow...) after the processional, before our officiant told the guests to be seated.

I've also been to weddings with a worship set, usually right after the unity ceremony (candles, sand, etc). They've had 2 to 3 of the couple's favorite hymns or modern worship songs and had the words projected on the screen or wall at the front of the sanctuary. You could print the words in the program since you'll be outside.

we're not doing a unity candle, we'll be outside on a national monument so we won't have any tables, candles, etc. we'll also not be handing out programs to avoid trash... but thanks for the suggestion :)

I like the idea of doing The Doxology, if I know that one, everyone else there should know it too lol

Since we're not doing any kind of unity candle or sand ceremony we're trying to figure out how to work it in. We're also not doing programs to avoid the trash and littering (accidentally or whatever).

The song that keeps coming to mind is Amazing Grace haha but I'm not sure if that's what we really want or not :-P

ii have seen this many times, but usually the words our in the program for anyone who doesnt kno the song which is nice so they dont feel uncomfortable but since you are avoiding the potential trash and not having programs, id pick a song that most of the guests would know. your Pastor or whoever is doing your ceremony could say please stand as we sing together "title of song"

could you have a spot in the ceremony where you and FI present a flower to the new MIL? (you present a flower to his mom, he presents one to yours).... that way its a sort of "welcome to the family" moment. You could easily just have 2 roses laying on a rock prior to the ceremony starting.

perhaps then, everyone can sing a song together. Though it may not be applicable, i remember one christmas mass in church, where the priest brought up the beatles song "when i'm 64" in the homily..... and the whole congregation ended up singing it. haha

As far as lyrics and such -- could you hand them out like a few days before hand, and let people know that you'll be singing a song together? At least if your immediate family knows, they can join in.

If I wanted to print lyrics to a meaningful hymn, and not have it become litter at an outdoor wedding, I would incorporate them onto some form of fan. Doubles as a favour.
