Invite Postage Question??

Hi gals!!!
Hope everyone is well. This week is our couples wedding shower and Im feeling a bit nervous. I dont know why lol Just a quick lil update:D

Well the reason I wrote this post is to find out how much you all are paying for postage for the invites. I have a pocketfold with layering and 3 inserts. I was told it would be 1.95 !!! I almost passed out until going to a second post office today. They told me it would be 85 cents but now Im worried they might get sent back.

What has been your experience? My invites are under 3ounces,
Anniversary

Re: Invite Postage Question??

  • Prior to sending out my invites, I went to two different post offices and had them price it out. Fortunately, they both told me the same price. That's strange they both gave you such different prices!

I know this may be a pain, but can you go to a third post office? Otherwise, I'd probably go back to the post office where they said it would be $1.95 and ask them why such a high cost, especially when another post office quoted you .85 (I'd tell them that - nicely of course :) )

I hope, for the sake of your budget, it's only .85 cents!!
  • My invites were pocketfold with 4 inserts and an rsvp card.  It weighed about 1.5oz and cost $.65 each.  When I went to the post office they had measured how thick it was.  If your invite is thick or has a weird shape (maybe from ribbon), then they might charge you more.

  • First time we went it was good for .45 she warned us just barely.  Well they are pocket fold and after 24 hours we noticed that the small sticker we had to seal it shut was lifting.  We added a little crazy glue.   wouldn't you know that stupid glue pushed us over.  So ours were .65 to mail.  Your first quote seems really high.  I would go back and ask them why the price difference.  Or you could mail one to say your parents and have them tell you when they get it then mail the rest.  Good Luck

  • Your first quote is high, but I work in the industry that involves a lot of mailing marketing material

So here is what I can tell you:
First, it must be less than 3/4" to mail as a letter. If its thicker, it gets priced as a "flat"

secondly, if there is anything that isn't flexible about the piece, it mails as a flat. (Which would be the 1.95 rate that you got---its a flat rate)

Thirdly if there is anything protroding that makes it Non-machineable (if it gets caught in themachine the piece wuld be destroyed)- then it must mail at a flat rate (again the 1.95)

IF all of these things are fine, then it can go as a letter.

Ours were 4 layers and thick with a pocket, and 2 respones and went at 0.65 cents
it needs to be below 3 oz I believe to mail at the 0.65 rate

Do you have a "main" postoffice in your area.
We have our main state post office near my office so I brought them there.
Typically they have regional ones too
That is where they do all the sorting etc. and whereall the trucks leave from.
I would go there. because whatever they say goes. If you go to a local postoffice and they say its 0.85 and it gets to the main postoffice and they dont agree they will send it back.

I would also leave them your name and number and tell them to CALL you rather than return all the invites to your house

  • I had square invites + 3 inserts in a petal holder. Between the envelope being heavier than 2oz and also being an "odd size" envelope (square), mine were $1.10.

Honestly, $1.95 seems wrong to me. $0.85 is a pretty normal postage amount. I'd have it checked again.

  • Wow, 1.95 seems pretty high. Are they an unusually shape or thickness? I was able to get by with a standard stamp, but just barely. The lady at the post office said not to add anything else or it would be over weight.
  • The shape of your invite can also make a difference I've heard. Our's were .45 but it was a flat card, rsvp postcard, business card sized hotel info card, and some baker's twine to hold it all together... I'd go to a 3rd post office if you can just to see.

  • $1.85 is a lot! I only paid $1.92 or so for my international ones (cousins overseas) and $.65 for the domestic ones. A third post office should help straighten things out, and definitely also ask why the rate is what it is. I2012do gave a nice explanation.

I agree $1.85 seems way steep. I have a standard pocketfold (folded to a little over 5x7) that had three inserts and then tied it closed with twine and a tiny engagement photo/ wedding website card. I paid .85 per invite. She said I could have gotten away with cheaper if not for the twine, it made it impossible for the invites to pass through their standard machines and I was not about to risk shredding all that hard work! I'm not sure why other offices charge the flat rate for this, maybe not all are willing to hand cancel the stamps?

  • I had a pouchette holder with 6 inserts (5x7 envelope) and it only cost me .65¢
I would definitely check to see that the cost is correct because the last thing you would want is for them to come back.

  • Ours were  $1.10 each.  They were square, and over weight - one layer, RSVP card, and reception card with two envelopes.  So if your pocket fold is square AND over weight that might be why?  I hope they made a mistake though, because I know how much it hurt to spend 1.10!

    This.

I went to the post office several times months over the past 6 months just to make sure I was getting a consistent price (it was). On the day I go to buy the postage the two workers got an in a discussion as to why one priced me $1.10 and the other at $1.85. Just as i2012do says, it depends on a lot of things. I also highly recommend trying to go to your local USPS hub for the final decision.
  • Thank you for your responses....I like the idea of going to a main post office . It looks as though that rate was pretty high. There is nothing to unusual about the sizing and no added details other than the extra weight which is under 3oz
