DIY Thursday

Glad to see the positive response for a DIY day. Like many brides, I am doing a ton of DIY projects for the wedding to save money. I hope these posts will inspire you and get your DIY on!

Supplies:

- 50-85 brooches, large earrings or necklaces

- 2 yards 5 inch wide Midori taffeta ribbon in gold

- 3 yards 3/8 inch wide Midori velvet ribbon in almond

- 3 yards of clear and gold seed beads strung on wire

- Scissors

- Wire cutters

- Needle nose pliers

- Hot glue gun with glue

- 22-gauge green florist wire

- Light green corsage tape

- Clear gem topped pins

- 2 stems of inexpensive artificial hydrangea-light green

For instructions please click here (directions were too long to post): http://www.projectwedding.com/wedding-ideas/diy-brooch-bouquet-tutorial

Carnation centerpieces

Supplies:
- Candlestick
- Oasis floral foam sphere
- Lots and lots of Carnations

Directions:
1. To begin, you first need a candlestick. This will be what the entire bouquet ball sits on. (see figure 2) You will also need lots of carnations. The more the merrier!

2. Top the candlestick off with a Oasis floral foam sphere, soaking it for 45 minutes, then drain on a paper towel. (see figure 3)

3. You know the drill... Make sure to work the carnations evenly around the foam sphere to distribute the weight. (see figure 4)

4. Continue adding more carnations until the entire sphere is covered. (see figure 5)

Voila! You could even used the colors carnations or color your own white ones to match your wedding colors simply with food coloring.

Fresh bouquet

Supplies:
- 30 to 60 stems of a hardy flowers (ex. rose) and 20 to 40 for each bridesmaid bouquet.
- Bucket
- Ribbon (pick a complementary color), 1 to 2 inches wide rubber bands or green waxed floral tape.
- Paper towels
- Stem cutter or very sharp knife
- Stem stripper
- Straight pins or pearl-tipped corsage pins

Special note: Be sure to stick to hardier flowers like roses, which are easier to arrange and can endure a little manhandling. To make a bridal bouquet about 8 inches in diameter, just follow the instructions below. This bouquet takes between 30 and 60 minutes to construct, and about 30 to 60 stems.

Directions:

STEP 1: Preparing the Flowers
Use your hands or a stem stripper to remove excess foliage and thorns, and pull off damaged or unattractive outer petals. Fill a sink or bucket with water, and holding the stems underwater use the stem cutter or knife to cut the stems at an angle about 2 inches from the bottom. Allow the flowers to drink for a few seconds with the stem ends underwater, then place the stems in a bucket filled halfway with cool water until you are ready to use them. Note: If you're working with roses and the heads aren't open yet, you can force the blooms open by placing the stems in a bucket of hot water; but only do this for a couple of minutes just before you are going to use the roses, or you might kill them otherwise. Keep the stems long while you work with them and trim them to a shorter length when you've finished constructing the bouquet.

STEP 2: Assembling the Flowers

Take one stem at a time with one hand, and use your other hand to hold the flowers in place. Assemble four flowers at an even height in a square shape -- these will be at the center of the dome. Arrange the other flowers one by one around the center flowers to create a dome shape. Note: To better see what the bouquet will look like in your hand, stand in front of a mirror as you construct the bouquet to observe how the shape is progressing.

STEP 3: Securing the Bouquet

Use a rubber band or floral tape to bind the stems at the spot where they naturally join (about 3 to 4 inches below the flower heads). Repeat the binding toward the end of the stems, leaving about 2 inches of excess stem beneath the bind to trim later. Either place the stems in water and wrap them later or continue to Step 4.

STEP 4: Finish the Handle

Cut the stem ends so they are all the same length, about 7 to 8 inches long. Dry off the stems with a paper towel. Cut a length of ribbon about three times as long as the length of the stems. Tuck the end of the ribbon inside the top bind and start wrapping in a spiral down the length of the stem. When you reach the bottom, wrap in a spiral back up the stem. At the top, tuck the cut end of the ribbon underneath and secure with a couple of pins pushed through the ribbon and into the stems. If you'd like a bow, cut a separate length of ribbon and tie it just beneath the flower heads.

STEP 5: Preserving the Bouquet

Wrap the bouquet in tissue. Store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to leave for the ceremony. For ultimate freshness, it's best to make the bouquet the morning of the wedding. Once the bouquet is constructed, keep the bare stems in water as long as you can and mist the heads well. Then when you're ready, wrap the stems.

  • Awesome post!  I admit that I am too lazy (and not very crafty) to do any DIY projects, but these are great ideas/instructions!  And I love your August Siggy - that cake is beautiful!!

  • I think the brooch bouquet is so beautiful and such a nice touch to be using something you created by hand. But like PP, I am neither coordinated enough, nor driven enough to complete it lol. I do love DIY centerpieces though and that you can do at a girls' wine night. Everybody sipping and snacking and helping you complete centerpieces :)

  • Awesome post!!!! Too bad I have my heart set on a cascading bouquet but if I wanted a round one then I would def use this DIY post! :D
  • This is a great idea i really could have used this when i was planning but i will show a few of my own DIY projects to help others out!!

    "Here Comes the Bride Sign"

My flower girl is just turning two this week and even though shes a very friendly and smart girl we didnt know how she would do with tossing anything down the isle.  Thats why we opted for the sign.  By making it my self instead of buying on through somewhere like Etsy i was able to not only keep the cost down but control the weight of it for her.
    Supplies:
    -thin precut wood from micheals
-desired paint colors, the teal on white stood out the best for me (easier to read than the opposite)
    -ribbon cut to desired length
    -mod podge for sealing
    Assembly:
drill two hole in top of wood then paint with background color.  next with a light pencil write out the words.  let dry then with a thin pain brush trace over the letters with the other paint color.  once completely dry coat with mod podge (i used the kind with sparkles to let it shine)  once that drys cut your ribbon and tie

Hope this helps some of you girls!! Dont be intemidated if you are not "crafty"  the things i did were not hard are all.  Just take it little by little and you will be pleased in the end im sure!

  • I have so many things i want to do decoration wise.

Theres just no point because right now im in the UK and it will be far too much hassle to make or buy things here and have to pay to bring it all over to FL. So im only doing a few small easy things. Its really frustrating! And its going to suck having to get all the things sorted in a month of being there before the wedding!

  • I love the DIY bouquet!  I was so tempted to do something along those lines, but I've always had my heart set on sunflowers.

And that flower girl sign is super adorable!

I hear ya Annie- I found so many great ideas I would totally have went with if we were doing our wedding locally.  Next month, I have to figure out which is cheaper .. shipping a box of my favors and few DIY's to my DOC or pack it in a carry on.
