December Honeymoon-New Years Riviera Maya Mexico

What a Summer this has been! We got married June 23, 2012 and postponed our honeymoon for December 28-January 3rd! We are staying at the El Dorado Royale. We are very excited and absolutely can not wait. I am sure that we will be even more excited come closer to the time because we will want to escape the cold and be in the warm! :)

What we were wondering....has anyone been to El Dorado Royale and have any recommendations for us? Also, what type of excursions do you recommend to do while we are there?

Has anyone been here over the New Year?

THANKS SO MUCH for all your help and recommendations! :)

  • One of our favorite activities was spending the day in Tulum. Amazing beaches and we loved snorkling in the cenotes.

  • dh and i will be in cancun and rm from dec 22 to jan 5 this year. we usually go the beginning of december and are really lookign forward to the holidays there this year. not sure where we're staying the 2nd week though. my top 5 excursions are coba, ek balam, sian kaan, rio lagartos and deep sea fishing. we've gone every december for the last 9 years and a week this past may as well. i never get tired of going down there.

  • I stayed at El Dorado Royale for my HM in June and it was incredible. Adults only AI is the way to go. Also- we stayed on the Casitas side, which I would 100% recommend. The service was better, we were closer to the better restaurants, and there were more amenities. Also the rooms on the Casitas side were incredible: balconies with queen size lounging beds, outdoor showers, personal concierge, etc.

The only downside to EDR is the beach- they have artifical reefs in the water, so you can get in about waist deep in the water, but to really swim would take a lot of manuevering. No fear, because there are 5 separate pools with swim-up bars on the casitas side to enjoy, which are lovely.

As for excursions, we went to cozumel and did a Jeep tour. It was fantastic because we stopped at so many beautiful beaches and even went snorkeling for an hour. My DH and I got to drive our own jeep privately while the tour guide was driving a separate jeep in front of us. Fun and private all at the same time! We also did parasailing and Xel-Ha, neither of which was AS enjoyable but they were still fun.

As for restaurants, avoid Cocotal (unless for breakfast), Kampai, JoJos, and D'Italia Casitas are great! Do go to the martini bar in the main lobby, and go to at least one show at Guacamayas bar. Las Islas is okay, and try to order the room service special breakfast at least once (lamb and lobster eggs benedict).

Another thing they never told us until our last day there- Even though the "order ahead" breakfast room service cards only state like 3 things... you can write whatever you want on there- Eggs Benedict, burritos, tacos, mimosas, bloody marys, yogurt, coconut pancakes, etc. Wish I would have known sooner, but when I did, it was delicious!
  • I would say you def should visit some ruins - I liked coba out of all the ones we say in the area.  Check out the sian kaan biosphere also - and Tulum - such a cute town
