Registry Question

One of my coworkers, who got married a few years ago, told me that they received a bunch of strange wedding gifts because they were items they hadn't registered for and the guests expected them to need. Examples are blenders, coffee makers, quesadilla maker, etc. This coworker recommended that I find a way to add some of these items to my registry and mark them as "fulfilled" if I did not want guests to purchase them. FI and I already have a waffle maker, blender, and coffee maker that we love, but I'm concerned that this is rude to mislead guests.

Should I add some fake items to the registry just to mark them as "fulfilled" or leave it alone and try to return any unwanted gifts?

I would leave it alone and maybe try to get word out through close relatives/friends that you already have these items.

If you have it, and don't want it, register and mark fulfilled, it's super easy to do at the Macy's registery. I wasn't registered for a coffee maker, and FMIL knew we didnt have one, so she got us a Keurig... it's great and we use it a lot, but I did add it to the registery, because I didn't want ANOTHER coffee maker! Same with the Kitchenaide mixer she got us... I didn't register for one because it's expensive, but I added it when we received one.. and I'm glad I did bc my bridesmaids were going to chip in and buy me one, bc they knew I liked them but felt guilty registering for one... they saw that I got one already and were bummed, but I'm sure they will figure something else out... I would add, and mark received for sure!

Agreed, leave it alone. What if you somehow got found out? How awkward.

Clever idea, but if people are buying you things that aren't on your registry, they probably aren't checking out your registy anyways. I don't see how a phony "fullfilled" would hurt, though. Unlikely people would find out.

I would leave it alone, but I don't know if this helps or not....on my wedding website's gift page I wrote that "getting married in this stage of our lives there is litlle we need or want etc......" Maybe something like that would make people stop and think "maybe they don't need a blender." I don't know, just a thought.

I'd leave it alone but I do get what you're saying- like, if someone gets us a coffee maker, it'll be a little annoying. Not because we already have one but because it's not on our registry because we don't drink coffee...

on our website we put a little disclaimer on the registry info page saying something along the lines of "since we've been engaged for almost 2 years, we've accumulated a lot of items through holidays and birthdays." we also tried to spread word of mouth that we just found a house to buy and plan to renovate the kitchen. a few of our guests have called our parents asking why we don't have X item on the registry, and have been told the same.

hopefully both of those strategies lend itself to more registry-related items or cash gifts. we also put gift cards on the registry (lowes, appliance store, craft/hobby store, restaruants, etc) in case people were opposed to cash and wanted to gift us something that we can spend on our projects.

the fake 'fulfilled' isnt a bad idea. it just sounds like it could get complicated

Just register for stuff you think you may want at any point. Then you can just return it and get store credit if you don't want it.

I wouldn't put those items on your registry, because even if it says "fulfilled" it may show up non-fulfilled. I had a shower yesterday, and opened 2 of the same of 2 items (registry had showed them as purchased a week before the shower, so not sure who purchased "duplicate"). Leave the registry alone, and just try and return any unwanted items.
