My FI had been dating for two years (exactly) and living together for nearly six months when he proposed on July 17! We had talked a lot about getting engaged/married and our future together and I knew he was ring shopping, so I knew it was going to happen soon. But my FI really wanted to surprise me...and boy did he ever!
It was a Tuesday night and we were going out to dinner with five other couples, all of my best friends from high school. After dinner and before desert, my FI stood behind me with his hands on his shoulders and said, "I don't know if you are all aware, but [my name] and I met for the first time two years ago tonight. Since then, she has become my best friend and I have fallen in love with her." At this point, I had NO idea still that this was a proposal. Then he said, "I heard once that if you fall in love with your best friend, you should marry her." I realized that something was up at this point and I turned to find him next to me, on one knee, holding a ring. I starting crying and hugged him so hard, I nearly knocked him over. My friends started screaming and taking pictures and our waiter brought over a bottle of champaigne.
I never thought I would like a public proposal (at least we were in a private room in the restaurant) but it was so great to have pictures and my friends' accounts. Once I saw my FI on his knee, I went into a different world! It was the best night ever and I wouldn't change a thing!
And best of all, I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend!
