Getting in Shape

***crfb, Arwo, other marathoners***

This is my last high mileage week before I taper.  I’m training for my first marathon & was wondering how to keep my appetite in check when I cut my mileage.  I have heard some people say it happens naturally- they aren’t as hungry because they aren’t running as much.  I’m skeptical & would like to know what you do when you taper.  Thanks!!

  • Hmm. I'm probably not going to be much help here, honestly. I've never been a runner for weightloss reasons, so I never really thought of how much I was eating during my taper period. I ate pretty much regularly, from what I can remember.

How long is your taper? I have never tapered for more than two weeks, and I don't think there's much possibility of gaining a significant amount of weight during that amount of time anyway, so I would guess you're worrying more than you need to be. What I do remember is feeling a little bloated when I cut my miles--exercise is a fairly efficient diuretic, so when I went from 50-70 miles a week to 10-20, it took me a few days to adjust. Stay hydrated, and eat good clean food.

I'd also say: don't forget that the purpose of a taper is to let your body recover a little bit. If you're not properly fueled during that time, it will hamper that recovery. Don't cut your calories so drastically that your muscles can't repair themselves!
  • Oops, also: have fun at your race! You'll be great!
  • I figured I was reading too much into it.  I actually have not lost any weight training for this race, and that's ok with me.  I'm pretty healthy, but I have heard some of my fellow runners say they tend to gain a few pounds during taper.  I am in my highest mileage week right now, then I drop down for 2 weeks and the 3rd week is the marathon.  I'm sure I'll be ok- I have decent eating habits but in my high mileage weeks I do indulge in more desserts than I would otherwise :P

Thanks so much for the advice!  It helps to just kind of put my mind at ease :)

  • I agree with "it'll happen naturally." Every time I train, the appetite seems to align itself with the running. :)
  • Good luck! Not a marathoner (YET) but when I take a week off (or two) in between seasons, I haven't noticed weight gain/loss or anything with appetite.  Sometimes I'm hungrier than normal, and I haven't notice a correlation with heavy volume or anything.

I have heard that a day or two before the race/race day you may weigh a teeny bit more because your body will be storing carbs/etc for your race.  Not sure if it is true or not, but it makes sense.
