What should the bride drink?

My wedding is a year away but I'm already planning my favorite wedding tradition; the open bar!

What should I drink the day of my wedding and during the reception? I don't want to get bloated from fizzy or sugary drinks. But I don't want to get wasted from straight alcohol. Suggestions?

Re: What should the bride drink?

  • I really liked the wines that we picked and our sig cocktail, but I mainly drank white wine (with a few sips of champagne and a cocktail that DH got).  I was worried about spilling the red wine on my dress, and I didn't want to have to pee too much.  My dress had a corset, and the tightness was not helping in that regard, KWIM?

Also, many brides don't end up eating a lot on their wedding day because they are busy saying hello to guests and, you know, getting married.  Make sure you are served first (or go through the buffet first) and try to get some food throughout the day, so you're not drinking on an empty stomach.  If your wedding is later in the day, have a good breakfast and lunch, and hydrate.  If your wedding is outside and it will be hot, consider having some water nearby during the ceremony.
  • I think I only drank one beer the whole time.
  • I drank riesling during the entire reception until I had a beer at the bar we went to once the reception was done and over with.

  • We only had wine at our reception. I drank white until I changed out of my wedding dress and into a red and gold sari. Then I switched to red wine. :)
  • I had a glass of champagne while I got ready. Then I drank beer during the reception I normally drink wine at weddings, but we had my favorite beer which I couldn't get where I lived so I had that. Not much though, I was too busy talking and dancing.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I had one glass of wine with dinner/to toast with and I think one screwdriver later in the evening, but mostly I drank water. I was so thirsty and dehydrated that water was the only thing that sounded good.

  • I think I am in the minority with drinking dark soda.  LOL.

I drank mimosas while getting ready but once I had my dress on, I drank nothing until after the ceremony.

After the ceremony, I drank rum and cokes and whiskey and cokes...along with champagne and I think I snagged someone's white wine.  I'm picky about my red wines anyway.

I agree with PP about making sure you eat something though.  I had breakfast before I headed to the salon.  The salon fed us wraps and strawberries, although at that point, I wasn't eating. During cocktail hour, I think a little server made it his mission to follow me around.  He came by with the crab cakes and jumped right in front of the photographer and said "You need to make sure you eat something.  Eat one"  Hahaha, he then made me eat another and then kept finding me when he would refill.  DH and I were the first ones through the food stations.  DH was grouchy he only got one plate of chicken stir fry.
