NWR: One Day Without Shoes

Did anyone else participate in this today? The TOMS Campus Group at my school planned a pretty extensive event. I'm really excited that I got to be apart of it. :)

I did not but my boss was talking about it.  I think it is a really neat concept, but unfortunately against company dress code :(

I read about it online late last night or early this morning (I can't remember when) and it would be pretty unprofessional of me as a teacher (not to mention unsafe since I have to walk inside and outside all the time!).  To boot, the school where I work is really rough so there is no telling what kind of garbage is on that floor!  I like the idea of people being more aware of how many people in the world don't even have shoes to wear, but I'm just not sure if "no shoes for a day" is really the way to get the word out.  It all seems rather unusual and I just wonder if there are other ways this campaign can work instead of asking us to all go bare-footed... :-/  Hope that doesn't make me sound cold... I really do care about those people, in fact, that's why I went on the mission trip to Haiti in 2002 - so we could build homes in cite d'soleil for people who live essentially in cardboard shacks.
July 16, Our Wedding Day, is also International Juggling Day!

I haven't heard about this. Maybe I need to start paying attention to current events. I never heard of TOMS either until today. Sounds cool though!

The part about it being unsafe is kind of the point. The kids that TOMS sends shoes to (it's a one for one thing...you buy a pair and that provides a child in need with a pair) are affected by soil-bourne illnesses, parasites and garbage much worse than our minds can comprehend.

I had a conversation with FI about this last night when I was telling him how grateful I am for my shoes after today...He was saying that the kids in other countries are used to walking barefoot and some of them don't even know any different, so it's a different situation. They aren't facing the exact same things we are, but it's the same concept.

And you'd be surprised about the kind of statement bare feet make. When you're standing in a large gathering area without shoes, people notice your little white toes sticking out. "One Day Without Shoes" isn't the only thing TOMS does. But it works. It gets people thinking and talking.
