Wedding Woes

Don't Die on Me Now!

I've been completely wasting time here today.  I feel like poo and can't concentrate, so I'm just riding the day out.

I don't have anything interesting.  Discovered I'm probably anemic, undertaking some eating/supplement changes to see if that's really what my problem is or if it's something else.

Um...that's all I got.

Re: Don't Die on Me Now!

  • I have to present a project to my boss that I have been working on for weeks she was out of town. I am hoping she'll be impressed.....but.....I need to make sure to temper my excitment. It's early in the game for this project, and she's not excitable. It's just the first time I feel like I have put together a client-ready product all by myself.

I'm leaving early because I worked through lunch.

I want to go see Fiona Apple again.

This has just turned into babbling.

  • I would love to see her new show, where she's just doing clubs.  The first new single is good, I'm ready for the album.

Babbling can keep me going at this point.
  • Has she released new tour dates? We used to go to shows all the time here - where there are so many venues. I need to get back into the habit of checking, and going without H, as he has a tendency to say no to everything.

Live music venues have just kinda died.  Our little town actually used to have a lot of live music (Bush, 311, No Doubt, Wallflower, Reverend Horton Heat and lots of other bands went through here in the early to mid 90s before they were headliners) and now there's just nothing.  It's sad and I miss it.  Shows used to like $10-$20, now you can only go to massive feastivals or kick out $100+ to see a good band from a good viewpoint.
  • PROTEIN, v...PROTEIN.  you get enough of that?

Did you do anything exciting for Cinco de Mayo?

  • O-face, I seriously don't understand how this happened.  With all of the spinach and chicken I eat, I was shocked to find this out.  But it explains a lot about my insomnia problems, problems concentrating, fatigue etc. We don't really eat a lot of red meat, so I'm trying the calcium and iron for awhile (I've also been deemed..hm, the pre-osteoporosis thing, jeez I can't spell today either).  I've always suspected I was bad around my period, but it seems that I'm not recovering fully in between like I thought.

We had a good friend over, made the dip I told you about, charred zucchini and corn fajitas and regular old flank steak fajitas, all the fixings, Mint Juleps, a jicama salad and then the skinny girl margaritas.  Also, we made the drinks on that page you sent me.  Holy.  Wow.  Those are YUMMY.  I also have enjoyed the strawberry simple syrup after that with just some mint and tonic.  Yum again.
  • Oh, your Cinco looks like it was awesome.  I've never actually tried Jicama.  True story.

I have always been super lucky in the iron department.  I wonder if it truly is hereditary?  Just curious.  Red meat helps, but I'm surprised with your spinach intake that you have lower iron.  I guess just supplement it up and check, as you're already doing.

  • I know.  When the nurse told me that, I was like, But, but...I eat raw spinach pratically every day!!!!

I have a love/hate relationship with jicama.  Sometimes the recipes are oh so tasty and good.  Sometimes, they are just so bland.  The fruit itself is very mild, so it's all about the flavorings you add.  This was a cucumber, jicama salad with red chile dressing.  The cucumber absorbed a lot of the cider vinegar and that combiend with the jicama and the mint was awesome.  But the chili powder dressing was offputting somehow.  I don't know if maybe I had a higher quality it would've been better, but I don't think I would've liked it then either.

I no little to nothing about nutrition, but I recall seeing something on TV that raw spinach isn't quite as good for you because it's hard to digest.  Just a thought.
  • Well, you might not be getting the iron you need from the raw spinach.  Most nutrients in raw leafy greens and other plants are pretty bio-unavailable as the human GI tract really isn't designed to do that kind of digestion duty.  Even several herbivores need a "second pass" at digestion of plant material in order to get what they need to survive.

Also, ever wilted an entire bag of the bagged spinach from the store?  It's a rather average/small serving of cooked spinach for one person, but one gigantor salad for one person.

1 cup raw spinach = 0.8 mg (5% RDA) iron
1 cup cooked spinach = 6.4 mg (36% RDA) iron.

I think there's been a bit of research showing inhibition of iron absorbtion in the presence of excess calcium (like a supplement or the mondo cheezy) and is improved with consumption of Vitamin C at the same time, especially when trying to absorb plant source iron.  IMO a bit of dietary OCD for a non-anemic individual, but if you're dealing with iron-deficiency anemia for whatever reason, a little bit of OCD might go a long way.

Watch the coffee and tea consumption with meals (and any other meds), that can inhibit iron absorbtion too.

And bite a cow every so often, preferably sear its booty in a cast-iron pan.  Let those Chik FilA cows know where to get off :)

What Barbie said.  I forgot about the calcium, Vit C thing.  I tend to high iron and that can be just as bad.  I remember researchin and they recommended the opposite for getting rid of iron.  If you google hemachromatosis they'll have info on combinations.
