Another post about tanning

So I recently made the decision to lay in the tanning bed. I'm actually not a fan of tanning, but when i went to my last dress fitting, i was highly nervous that day ( about the shower ) that i was blotchy red all over my chest and neck. Doesn't look so great when you're pale as i am and wearing a strapless white dress! There's no way i'm not going to be nervous on the wedding day and i don't want the added stress of being blotchy red.

so my question is... i need to lay again because i now have streeks on my back from uneven lotion applicatoin ( nothing can ever be simple!) However, my back is burnt. How long should i wait to lay again... i want to be tan and not waste my money, but i certainly do not want to peel!  Any advice from those who are experience in the tanning bed area is appricicated!

  • Do not go again until your burn is completely heeled. Did you get lotion with sunless tanning in it too? It should never streak... that is weird.

Doesn't sound like you tan real well? You have to start really short...how many minutes did you go in? I'd go maybe 2-3x per week, start at like 5-6 mins and gradually go up. Also, the special UVB beds are better...and stand ups will help you not burn in weird spots like the lay down beds do.

Edit: what kind of lotion are you using? Don't use SPF lotion or you're defeating the purpose of the tanning bed. If you are using the stuff they recommend there, its probably more so from how your skin was pressed up against the bed than the even applicatoin. Those lotions only really draw the rays b/c moist skin (sorry, hate that word) will tan faster than dry.

  • I'm not the best tanner. The last time I used a tanning bed was for junior prom... so 5 years ago.. and i did get tan after a few weeks.  This time around the first time i laid was for 7 minutes in just a base bed, then two days later ( last night) i laid for 10 minutes. Oh, and my lotion is Austrailian gold accelerator... because other wise i do not tan.

Yeah, I think you went too long. The lotion shouldn't make you streaky either. Try a stand-up and go for less time a few more sessions bfore you bump up to 10 minutes. It takes me a while to get tan in a bed also....shitty, but burning is bad, and I'd rather have a slow process than a fast burn.

  • It might not just be from uneven lotion application. They might have had new bulbs or something of that sort. I honestly would be hesitant to go after that. Being a little blotchy on your wedding day is better than burnt.
  • Do they have a stand up bed? That could even out your tan. I still go to the beds when I'm a little burnt

  • lol tanning in general is bad!!!  but i'm self conscious enough lol   They don't have stand up beds, or i def would have done that because it actually scares me to tan ( final destination done it in for me! lol )  I actually don't know of a place in my area that has a stand up bed that doesn't cost an arm and leg.

Darn. That's where I go and the only place I know of that has stand up beds. I don't put lotion on back and it doesn't look less tan or anything. Maybe that would work better?

Is there a planet fitness in your area? I go there, and with the "black card" aka the $20/month plan you get free tanning. They have stand up beds, at least the ones here do.
  • So I am super pale and have a hard time tanning as well.
I go to the lay down beds.. but I am a freak and I rotate in them. Like half the time I am laying on my back and the rest of the time on my front.. so I can get the arm pits. I think of it like a rotisserie chicken! ha ha!

and if I burn I wait till my burn is gone before I go back. Otherwise it gets worse.
  • I don't like tanning beds at all so I am just dealing with being pale. I try to lay in the sun for a light base but lately haven't even had time for that so I guess pale is how I will be.
  • This thread is funny! I live in south florida so you would think I would be tan, NOT. My sister and I are not tanning bed fans, thinking we can just do it naturally but it has been raining non stop and we aren't even into the summer full on yet, which it usually rains all the time. So the other day she was trying on her dress and looked at me and said: "I really think we need to rethink this whole tanning bed thing". Anyway, I'm afraid so this thread is helping allot!
  • Definitely let the burn heal or it will just get worse.  Wait a minimum of 4 days and see how your skin looks then.  Burns increase your odds of skin cancer with every one you get; especially if you blister.

I just started at Palm Beach Tan in my area and since it's been YEARS since I've been in a tanning bed, I started off at 5 min the first time, then 6 min, then 7 and now I'm up to 8. Just after these 4 times over a span of two weeks, I'm happy with my color.

I think you may have increased your time too quickly, like PP have said. Do you have a Palm Beach Tan anywhere in your area? Not sure about all of them, but I know the ones around here have a stand up tanning booth. Maybe check there?

  • Have you thought about doing a spray tan?  They usually go on really smooth (no streaking) and it would help with the red/ blotchy problem without you worrying about getting burnt before the wedding.  Just a thought!  :)
