Getting in Shape

just started this board and need help!

Hey guys! I just started looking at this board, but I've written other things on other boards on the knot, but I need some advice.  I've been on and off working out since november and been trying to eat better but my problem is that I go strong for about 2-3 weeks see not results (which I know is pretty standard and unrealistic to think I would see anything) and I give up for about a couple weeks then start up again. Any ideas on ways to push through that week where I get defeated by no results? I started a calender where I write down when I work out and cross out the days where I don't to get a visual on what I'm not doing so maybe that might help, but I need something else to push through.  Thanks all!

Re: just started this board and need help!

  • start slow, make small goals for yourself. ex:
I will eat fruits and veggies at the beginning of every meal this week
    I will go for a 30 minute work-out 3-4 days this week
or I will only have 1 soda a day

It took me 2 years to lose 35lbs...and I did the same thing at the beginning I started out too hard and then went back to old habits a few weeks later.  You'll be happier if you can accomplish your goals and you'll be more likely to stick to it if you're suceeding.

  • Have you tracked your calorie intake?
  • if you're into tracking I found sparkpeople.com helpful for that.

This. I did not see ANY results until I tracked my calories. I was under eating when I was trying to lose weight, which is just has bad as over eating - because I had no idea how much I could eat when trying to lose weight. And when I wasn't trying to lose weight I was overeating, hence the weight gain.

Also, I waited about 4 weeks to weigh and measure myself from when I started. My body seems to take a long time to reflect change. I knew if I weighed myself and didn't see any movement I would give up. So I just kept doing it everyday and at the end of the first 4 weeks I weight myself.

    Good luck!

  • I agree with the calorie tracking method, it's slow but steady and it keeps me accountable.

  • I have tried tracking in the past so I'll give it a go again and stick with it hopefully.  does sparkpeople.com help with figuring out calories on homemade meals? I find that the most difficult in counting calories and knowing how much is in the food I make for lunch and dinner.

maribeth- that sounds a lot like me as well, when I don't work out I think I eat way more, but when I do work out I eat a lot less.  at least that's what it feels like to me thanks for the suggestions tho
  • I found that it can give a pretty good estimate.  it helped me think about food differently, that whole idea of lifestyle change instead of dieting really helped me lose it and keep it off (almost 3 years without gaining it back!). at least when I started using it 5ish years ago it was free, has support groups, good tips, and will help you track workouts and calories.
ingeneral when i was logging things I'd round up for calories in and round down for calories out. Logging just helped me think before I took another trip to the kitchen for a snack.

  • Honestly, I did weight watchers and it really worked. I started it after not losing any of the weight after my son was born last year. i've lost 28lbs since then and only have 4.4 more to go! I never thought it would work this well but it did. it's worth a try. You dont even have to pay for the meetings, just go a few times, get the book and the calculator and do it yourself at home. its basically the same thing as tracking but its easier. less math!

I was also VERY stuck - couldn't lose a pound. I'm 43, so figured with my declining metabolism, I was doomed.  I ended up getting desperate and paid for personal training at my gym - just once a week for 1/2 hour for 2 months.  Amazing results!  I simply was doing the wrong type of exercise...he really helped me boost my routine.  I added short bursts of running on the treadmill (NEVER thought I could run), and weight training to build muscle. In the past, I would just walk more, and do a few minutes of weights (if that) - he really flipped that around - a moderate amount of cardio - and lots of weights.   Not to mention, he recommended the Daily Plate - a free online calorie tracking system, which helped me visually balance my proteins (30%), fats(30%), and carbs (40%).  I ended up losing 15 lbs.  over the next 3 months.  Even if you can't spare the money for a trainer, I would recommend learning to do some weight bearing exercises - I really think that's what helped me!  Good luck!

I ALWAYS end up giving up as well or there will be a "Special" event( which could just mean Saturday) I would give myself some wiggle room on that day then it would be all down hill from there.  My problem is motivation because I want great results but if I can't see them its not working.

I worked it out with my Fiance who is now starting to motivate me more.  His support goes from him eating what I need to eat in order to lose weight to keeping tabs on how much I work out.  I am going to start up a reward program for myself as well i.e. if I work out 4x in 1 week on Sunday I get a new pair of shoes or a pedi.  **NON FOOD RELATED REWARDS**
  • If you have an iPhone download the free app LoseIt! At the beginning you enter in your current weight and goal weight. It then calculates out a healthy amount of time to lose that weight and a healthy daily caloric intake to help you get there. It has a barcode scanner which is awesome, especially for homemade meals. You just scan the barcode of the items you use and how much you consume and voila! You can also enter in your exercises and it takes that into account and gives you a daily/weekly summary. I have been using it for a month and am on track with my weight loss!
