Cakes

No baby yet, so I'm still here!  :)

I have some time, but I'd like to try some different cakes when we are down there in September.  Who is everyone going with?  Originally, we were thinking Great Cakes.  I've seen nothing but good reviews online and I love how their Key Lime Bliss Cake sounds.  We were going to order samples and probably use them.  However, a friend of mine told me absolutely not to use them.  That she could never get a hold of them, their vm was always full - like they never checked it, their cake wasn't what they wanted, it didn't look very good and was way too sweet.  I'm more inclined to go with a review from someone I know than just what I read online.

Who is everyone else using? When it comes to my cake, I'm very picky.  I don't mind spending $800 on this because I make cakes myself (not professionally, but I'm pretty decent) and have very high standards. I want it to look gorgeous.  I hate when you go to a wedding and the cake is slightly leaning or something. The cake tasting amazing is also a number one priority.  I hate bad cake!

I am using Atlantic Cake Company....yumm yumm yumm!!!  My SIL used Great Cakes and they were really good and we were going to use them as well, but Atlantic cakes were just as good and a little cheaper.

Patti Cakes is another popular one as well

Glad that baby is staying put until FI comes home!  Keep us posted :)

I'm using Linda Bradley from Beach Ball Events.  Her cakes are great and really reasonable.

I am using Great Cakes as well and we are going with the Key Lime Bliss.
I met with Marsha at Great Cakes - and I have to say - my experience was completely different.
She made an appt with us right away and when we we met her she was so very nice.  We had just had a bad experience when we we met with Just Desserts, so maybe I was expecting the worst, but Marsha was very very helpful.
She was willing to work with us and not nickel and dime us for every design feature (which is what Just Desserts was going to do).
Also, the Key Lime Bliss is AMAZING!  My mom, FI and I all tasted it when we met with her and LOVED it.
I would recommend giving her a try even if its just taste the cake - heck taste as many as you can!  Its so much fun!!

We are doing Patti Cakes!  Emily is absolutely adorable and her cake tastes great!  I really liked Marsha from Great Cakes (and also had a great experience with her), and her cake was yummy too, but both my fiance and I preferred Emily's.

I agree about tasting as many as possible - YUM!

We are also going with Great Cakes, and the Key Lime Bliss. I 2nd Flip, we had a great experience with them and have never had problems getting in contact with them. To be honest, we didn't try but one other baker and we were already sold on the other cake.

I agree with Flip though, try as many as you want! It's your chance to have fun with it!

I am doing the Key Lime Bliss next month and will let you know how it is!  I have just dealt with them by email and onw phone call and communication has been good.  In fact, the one time I did call they knew exactly which cake I was talking about without looking it up and I hadn't been in touch with them in a while.  I didn't do any tastings and just went on reviews and the fact that the key lime was different and sorta beachy.  I'm not a big fan of chocolate and wanted something less ordinary.

We used Cakes by Robin.  I prefer plain ole buttercream(boring, I know) and hers is amazing!   She was easy to deal with and was very accomodating.  Everyone LOVED it!! I am still getting compliments one week later.  It looked exactly as I envisioned it! I highly recommend her.

We used Emily Patti w/Patti Cakes.  She was amazing.  Her cake was amazing.  She was able to create a dark chocolate vegan layer that no one could believe was actually vegan.   The lower layer was almond with an almond whipped buttercream.  The cake was way too big for the 35 people we had in attendance, but it was gone by dinner the next day...

Thanks everyone!  I will definitely try the cake from Great Cakes first.  I was SO disappointed when I heard that from my friend.  She got married 4 years ago...so maybe they were just starting out...?  I was so excited for the Key Lime Bliss because I love key lime pie.  Also, we are going with Margaritas as our signature drink and a fajita buffet dinner  from the Black Pelican.  :)  YUMMY!

We are using Cakes by Robin. We met with her in May; she invited us right in her home and treated us like old friends. She is so easy to work and I feel her prices are reasonable.
She does everything out of her house with a little help from her niece :) She only uses buttercream, so if you wanted something different, don't use her!!!
I'm very excited to see our cake and what she created for us in Sept!!!!

We are using Argyles. Her cakes (and food) was amazing and she was fantastic to work with.  My FI and I have a budget and we did have a good experience with great cakes when we met with Martha, it was just her cakes were just a little too pricey.  Great cakes quoted us for $800 and Argyles for $500.  We are having 150 people at the wedding but only wanted a cake for about 80. (a lot of our friends would rather be at the bar then in line for cake). Either way, Great Cakes I have heard nothing but good things about. Good luck and happy planning!

We had Great Cakes' key lime bliss cupcakes (and two other flavors) at our reception and they were DELICIOUS.  Everyone raved about the cupcakes - in fact they still do, two + months later!!  Marsha does have an assistant, Amy, now, who I corresponded with regularly around the time of the wedding.  They were really great to work with in my opinion.  I really wouldn't hesitate!  Good luck!

We used Outback Kitchen.  They are in Avon but it was the BEST CAKE I've ever had.  Our guests are still talking about it.  Plus it only cost $425. Heres a pic:

Gorgeous cake hibiscus!  I wonder if they'd travel to Manteo for delivery... I just may check them out and do a taste test...

Not sure but I am thinking they would.  The vendors down there are used to travelling.  Plus, Manteo from Avon is only about an 45 minutes to an hour.  We ate that cake for 5 days after the wedding and it was still just as fresh as when we cut it.  We are ordering a "top tier" from them when we go for our one year and I can't wait.

I know!! Its gorgeous right?  We want TWO cakes.  We are a little over the top.  LOL.  We want one like hibiscus's cake but more simple and in sheet cake form.  This will be our groom's cake.  We want a FL Gators (FI) and NY Jets (me) towel each lying in the sand.  I want this for my main wedding cake, minus the yellow flowers.  Our initial at the top will be an "E"

OBX2011 and entourage have tasted a lot of cakes.  Some we had to (believe it or not) were so bad that we had to spit into a napkin.  A lot of them were overpowered with flavorings.  Some were too dry and some had way too much filling between the layers.  And we did not want fondant.

We found the absolute best cake I have ever eaten in this country.  It was from Atlantic Cake and Susan, the owner, was so wonderful to work with.  Best of all, she met us at a coffee house with the tastings.  Yum, Yum.  She uses Swiss Meringue Buttercream and mostly liqueur flavorings.  I think OBX picked chocolate truffle and white chocolate cake with strawberry/ ? filling.  I am salivating while I type this. And best of all, she is very reasonable.

So after tasting the Key Lime form Great Cakes and Just Desserts, FI is set on having this as our wedding flavor.  I just found that Atlantic Cake Co and Argyles both have Key Lime too--has any one tasted this flavor specifically from either place?

Yes!  Atlantic's key lime is delicious as well.

Susan from Atlantic and Martha from Great Cakes should go toe to toe on key lime bliss, lol

When we go down in September for our yearly vaca, along with our 3 venue visits, and 2 caterer tastings, we have Great Cakes scheduled and absolutely have the Key Lime Bliss on the top of the list.  Unless that cake "flops", I think we already have that penciled in as our "go to" cake for our big day.

It seems that more and more people are going with Great Cakes...I'm hoping that the one bad review I got from a friend is a result of Marsha not having an assistant back then.  :)
