What to do with Bridesmaid Dress?

Hi Everyone!

Recently, one of my bridesmaids did one of the worst things ever, she backed out of my wedding, and hasn't talked to me since, essentially ending our friendship.  I am not really sure why this happened.  My sister sent out an email about the bridal shower, and literally, two days later, she called me about freaked out.  Her bridesmaid is being made right now, and I called the store and they would not cancel the order.

So, I am left with a bridesmaid dress that I need to sell.  Does anyone know of a place where I can sell my dress?  I don't want to take it to a local consignment shop and get pennies for the dress.  It is a Bill Levkoff, style 150, size 8, watermelon.

Thank you so much!

  • I'm so sorry that this happened. But, unfortunately, when you get the dress, you will likely only get about half for it. The best places to post are on the classifieds board, ebay, and craigslist.

    Good luck!

  • She paid for the dress, but she said that I could take care of it so that we didn't have to talk again when it came in.

I figured I would sell it and use the money towards the other girls' alterations.

Typically don't the shops contact the clients directly when their orders come in?  I think David's always called me directly to tell me my BM dress was ready for pick up.  My brides didn't coordinate that, as far as I recall.

That would probably be the way to go right?

Sorry to hear you are having issues with a friend, hopefully it can be worked out or you have a clean break.

Then how on earth is this a problem?  If you sell the dress you're basically getting money for nothing since you didn't buy it in the first place, and if you don't sell the dress you don't lose anything, since again you didn't buy it in the first place.

Also, how is a bridesmaid dropping out of your wedding doing one of the worst things ever?

  • Yes, any monetary gain would be great.  However, like I said, I would like to take the money earned and put it towards my other bridesmaids alteration costs since they have absorbed some of the burden.  I know it isn't a huge contribution, but it is a small way to show gratitude.

My bridesmaid dropping out of my wedding wasn't the worst thing ever; her ending our friendship was.  I was asking for advice, not a debate.

It depends on the shop.  When I purchased a BM dress for a wedding this April, my name along with all the other BMs were put under the brides wedding party.  Only the bride will be contacted when the dresses arrive and then the bride will let each of us know.  So maybe this is the case with OP.

OP, I am sorry your friend dropped out of your wedding and ended a friendship.  I would list the dress on Craigslist or Ebay and try to sell it that way.

  • I say try ebay, you'll a larger market. I got 3 out of 4 of my BM on ebay & just had them dry cleaned making them like new. The cost allowed me to pay for my girls dresses for them. For record, I did ask them if they were ok if I got their dresses off ebay & had them cleaned before doing it. They were all about saving money too.

Sorry to hear about your friendship. Best of luck with the rest of your wedding stuff.
