Reception/Food Question

My question is regarding reception food!! We have our venue booked and they provide the catering (one less thing to worry about!!) but I'm wondering when we should go and do our taste test to decide what to have served... obviously not for a couple more months but it should be done before the official invites go out right?? same with the cake/bakery?

yeah... I totally had another question to ask but I blanked on it!  lol

TIA!

Re: Reception/Food Question

  • Yes, you should do your tastings before invitations go out, especially if you're doing a sit down dinner and your guests have to pick a meal choice. Get in touch with whoever is in charge of catering at your venue and ask them about doing a tasting; they should be able to provide some guidance on when to schedule it. Our tasting will be later this fall, once our caterer wraps up wedding season. I believe that with the cake tasting, bakeries will normally provide a small cake in the flavors you've requested for you to try. Not totally positive on this one as my sister (who is a baker) is making our cake, so maybe one of the other ladies can provide some clarification for you on that one.
  • I agree with Emily on contacting the venue to find out about tasting. In my venue they usually do a big event in January where the couples who are getting married there are invited to come in and taste, but not sure if that's a common thing.

As far as the cake goes, we are doing a tasting in a few weeks, but we want to get all the big vendors booked soon since FI will be working full time and going to school full time start September, so he won't have time to meet with vendors. I've called the bakery to make a tasting appointment, and they said they will have most of their flavors available along with the pictures of cakes they can make (but they also have a ton of pictures on their website).

    Hope this helps!

  • I contacted mt venue to ask that same question and she told me sometime late this year or into January for taste testing. Your venue will be able to give a good idea on when to set that up.
I did my cake tasting already and have that set to go already.

  • Our venue doesn't provide catering so I am going with an outside vendor.  I am having an issue where my mom and my WP like one vendor but they are way out of my price range and do  not offer as much as another vendor I found.  I am going to try and set up a few taste testing over the next month or so that I can make a wise decision.

  • We've already done the taste test. I agree with PPs that you should call the caterer and ask when you should do it. As for the cake the places I have asked say that it should be done about 6 months out. But again you could call the bakery you wanted to use and ask them when they recommend scheduling it.

  • Ask your venue when they do tastings. Some do large group tastings only a few times a year and others do private ones whenever you want. I know our venue does our catering and we can set up a tasting anytime after the six month mark. Definitely do one prior to invites, especailly if you do a plated dinner. You'll need to know what you're serving.
