Greek Customs

I'm Irish, FI is Greek.  Best friend is Irish musician who will be playing Irish aires for our wedding which will be a non church ceremony.  Any ideas of Greek customs I can suggest incorporating into the ceremony?  Any flowers that are traditional for the bouquet?

Re: Greek Customs

  • I am Greek Orthodox and I went to a wedding of a Greek girl marrying a non-Greek in a non-denomination wedding.  They did the Greek wedding crowns (see here) which was very nice.  You can also give Jordan Almonds as part of the favors (click here and scroll to the Traditions section).  I am also doing a Greek tradition (more fun than important) of writing the unmarried bridesmaids names on the bottom of my shoes at the beginning of the day, and the person who's name wears off the most by the end of the night is the next to be married.

    Hope this helps!

Im so glad you have seen this outside the church and didn't get offended. FI is Romanian Orthodox, and I love the crowning part of the Orthodox ceremony, but I was worried his family (all 5 of them that are in the US) would think it was irreverant. They aren't really devout, but it is definitely part of an Orthodox ceremony. I've wanted to do that ever since my Greek cousin's wedding when I was little.

  • FI is Latino and half of my family is Greek Orthodox.  Our officiant is well-versed in the traditions of many cultures and religions, so our ceremony (outside of the church) will include the rosary lasso (Latino tradition) and the crowns (Greek tradition).  We're also going to have three short readings during our ceremony... one in Spanish (by one of FI's relatives), one in English (by my aunt), and one in Greek (by my great-uncle).

  • peaches, when you put your ceremony together (if you haven't already), would you please PM me and share it? I am interested in how you mixed those heritages.

Personally, I didn't mind it, but I do know that several people in my family were a bit put off by it.  I like the idea of bringing the two heritages together.

  • I am in the exact same situation as you but we will be having a mostly Greek wedding. I'm loving all these Greek traditions I'm finding on here today. The shoe one sounds so fun! Definitely doing that! : )
