My traditional vietnamese dress! Check!

My check for this weekend: picking up my traditional vietnamese dress from the seamstress! The dress is lavender (like our wedding colors) with handmade embroidery. The dress and white pants are silk. I love it. I will wear it during our tea ceremony on our wedding day. What do you think?

    It's beautiful!
  • looks great!  I've actually been invited to my first Vietnamese wedding this October and looking forward to it.  Over 400 people!?!  10 food courses!!  I can't wait!  tdmaus, if there is anything unique etiquette-wise for a Vietnamese wedding please let me know.  I know there's a board for this type of question but I like the Philly board and it's participants better.

Oh thats great! Yes, vietnamese weddings are usually large (the more people - the better) and a lot of food courses, all similar to chinese food though, e.g. fried rice, peking duck, etc... I didnt grow up in Vietnam, so i actually don't like vietnamese or chinese food at all. Hahaa. So my Fi and i have an americanized reception with steak entree and such instead. LOL We're having the tea ceremony for my parents though, to make them happy. Are you going to the tea ceremony too? Or only the reception? I don't think, there are any unique etiquettes... except: asian people tend to come late... i've been to weddings, where the guests came in like 2 hours late to the reception! Have fun!

This person didn't grow up in Vietnam either but I think they are close to one generation removed from growing up there.  I think the food is going to be pretty traditional.  Apparently there's this caterer they're bringing in from Atlanta that specializes in authentic Vietnamese catering.  I know Charlotte is probably too small to offer that kind of niche.  We're actually planning on a couples date to a Vietnamese restaurant to "preview" some of the things we might be eating.  I've always wanted to try those kind of places but am always intimidated by the language barrier and being unfamiliar with etiquette, etc.  So it'll be nice to have a guide.

I don't know if we're invited to a tea ceremony.  She said that normally there is no STD even.  Also, she said that the preferred wedding gift is cash and that some people will adjust the amount they give based on the quality and amount of food at the reception?!?!?!  She also said she had to pay extra to have police presence because many people (especially the older generation) will show up even though they aren't invited.  They'll even bring their entire extended family even if they themselves weren't even invited.  Crazy stuff but my fiance and I are looking forward to the experience.

Oh, i never heared of that!! They usually give gift cash/check, but they are usually in a sealed envelope, so I dont think, they will adjust that during the reception. Also never heared of uninvited guests bringing their family, etc... i guess, there is always a first time :)

@tdmaus-where did you get your ao dai?  It's very nice! I'm looking online at a few websites, but I'd prefer to get measured and fitted in person.
