Music: must play & do not play...

I know everyone has different taste in music, but I'm curious to know what songs people put on their must play and do not play lists. I'm feeling like my do not play list should be A LOT longer. haha
Thanks for the input!  Cool

Our DJ made some of it easy as he listed a bunch of the "typical wedding songs" (you know, chicken dance and all that) and then we had to check off dont play, must play, dont care or things like that.

I didn't put too many on the must play....a handful of songs that were meaningful to us (Sweet Home Alabama, Can't getenough of your love, Hootie, etc)....after a few converstaions and my responses to the types of music section (like, don't like, things like that) he knew what we wanted to hear and he did an excellent job.  People danced from dinner to the end.  All ages too...It worked out perfectly.and we also said he could take requestes if people wanted.

I do remember having Butterfly Kisses also on my don't play as well as any other songs that have to do with fathers and daugthers (my dad died, now, 6+ years ago) and I didn't want the reminder.

I haven't focused too much on the playlists yet but I will be soon.

Our DJ has a very comprehensive system online where we can customize everything and it actually makes it more difficult at times because I have too many choices. : )

I know I don't want any of the macarena, chicken dance, or conga lines.

As for must play songs, we'll probably come up with a list of about 20 and let the DJ do the rest.

Definitely this. We went to a wedding a few years ago where the couple listed every single song the dj played . It was awful, there was no flow and a lot of the songs couldn't really be danced to very well (at least by people like me with little dancing ability). A good dj knows how to transition to get everyone on the dancefloor and keep them there.

I agree - though our "do not play list" was kind of long, we had a very short "must play" list. You don't want to constrict the DJ too much. Ours did an awesome job (though our crowd doesn't need much encouragement). Same with photographers - if you give them a list of 100 shots they have to take, you're preventing them from being creative.

Absolutely. My must play list is pretty short, but my do not play list is very long. I'm glad I posted about it though because there are songs that I hate that I couldn't think of when making the list.
I made an additional list of artists that we like so that he knows our taste in music, but I didn't want to put it on the must play list because I want him to do what he feels is best throughout the course of the night.
    Thanks for the input!
p.s. I hate hate hate We are Family, and of course my FMIL made a point of saying that if she could just pick one song to hear that would be it. Oh man... haha

It's good to have a do not play list, bc your guests may run up to the DJ and give him a hard time about not playing their requested song....then he can just point to the list! It happened at both mine and my sister's weddings. Guests wanting songs that we HATED (You've lost that lovin' feeling.....UGH longest song ever! and annoying if it doesn't have special meaning to you)

I hate it too - it was on our do not paly list. I bet if the dj never plays it she won't miss it.

Case in point: My mom was absolutely APPALLED at the thought that we didn't want any group dances - no chicken dance, no electric slide, none of that crap. We asked her after the wedding and she didn't even notice that we didn't have any of that played.

And that is when you inform you dj that in no way do you want those songs.  He won't anyway play them if you put them on the do not play.

And i agree with kristin and riss that a good dj will do the trasition correctly and I also do not like people that make a huge must play list.  I was in a friend's wedding a few years ago and it was the WORST music ever.  I heard that during my wedding, her husband said "that music is a little progressive"  WHAT?

we are not professional DJs and therefore we should not give our DJs huge lists of songs 'we' like - what about our guests??
we do not know what our guests like otherwise we would all tell them to eat Beef!
    avoid the cheesy songs yes but giving a DJ a huge list of songs we the bride and groom like is a recipe for disaster;
I went to a wedding a few years ago where the bride and groom had a ipod jacked into a sound system...what a total mess!
No DJ and no MC to make announcements - it was a shambles!
I felt embarrassed for the bride and groom!
we were sitting having dinner and this rock music came on blasting as they had not timed the play list right...the best man ran over stopped the music and there was no music for about 15 minutes because he could not make it work right after drinking so much beer and the sound from this sound system was dreadful, the microphone they used kept squealing and .ugh what a disaster!!
