help me with my fitbit

Ok, I need fitbit help.  Entropic or Kwith, I bet one of you can help me.  I wore my fitbit all day, I tracked what I ate on MFP, and then I synched the two.  I also logged my exercise on MFP:

-I ran a little over 5 miles and my Garmin calculates my calorie burn based on pace, weight, height, and altitude gains/drops, so I entered this in MFP.
-I entered 15 minutes of high impact aerobics for my crossfit WOD since it was the closest exercise I could come up with, even though I was pretty much dying, same way I feel when I run a 15 minute tempo run.
-I did not enter my warm up (situps, pushups, squats) or the lift we did before the WOD, since it wasn't very intense.
-I started my fitbit at the start of my run and stopped at the end of my run (I ran to and from crossfit so I did this twice).

When I entered my calories burned in MFP, I logged what time I started (so it matches the time I started my fitbit) and the duration.

MFP is currently telling me I have 1600 calories REMAINING to EAT!  I ate 1044 between breakfast, lunch, and snacks-I have not eaten dinner yet.

What am I doing wrong?  Why do I have 1600 calories REMAINING to eat?  I walked about 20,000 steps today, which includes my run and a round trip walk to my client site (about a mile each way).  This can't be right.  Or maybe it IS right and this is why I haven't been losing any weight?

HELP!

EDIT: My daily goal is 1200, if that helps.

Re: help me with my fitbit

  • Yeah I think I'm set to lose 1lb a week-I went back into MFP and entered what I'd like, but it didnt change between 1 and 1.5 per week (it keeps telling me .9 per week with a target of 1200 calories, which is fine).  I really have about 10lbs I'd like to lose, so not a ton, and totally doable, but I'm working out a ton and not seeing any movement past where I'm at.  I need to eat more consistently, I know I kill my momentum on the weekends.
  • @Freebread - there is actually a quirk with the syncing where it will double count the exercise and give you too many calories. Took me a couple of times to realize it was doing it. It's a problem they're aware of, but as far as I know is not fixed as of yet. I recommend NOT entering your workouts into MFP (or put them in as zero calories burned if you really want to track what exercises you're doing and for how long).

And now i'm starting to feel like a slacker! Winter is killing me with not getting my afternoon walks.

  • So I get what you're saying about the double counting but I still don't know the correct way to log calories.  Should I just not wear my fitbit while running?  Is there a way to erase the calorie count for certain time periods so that I can count it in MFP or enter manually?  I trust my garmin a lot more because it uses pace and altitude to calculate my calories burned--just the number of steps I take isn't a reflection of the effort know what I mean?  And since the fitbit won't really count my crossfit workout since its lifts and other exercises, I want to enter that in MFP for calorie tracking.

What do you suggest I do differently, or can I still "count" the number of steps but not the calories?
  • That is a bit tougher - If you want to go by your HRM calorie burn then maybe removing the fitbit for those activities would be best?

I don't know because I don't have a HRM and most of the activities I do with my FitBit I feel like the burn is pretty accurate. I think the best thing might be to just try a couple different ways of logging everything and see what works best for you - obviously what's working for me might not work for you.

The FitBit activity log doesn't allow you to modify calorie burn for specific activities...I would recommend getting in touch with FitBit or posting on their forums to see if there is a better answer out there for you.

  • Thanks! I'm going to try a few different things-I might just remove it for CrossFit, but keep it on for running and compare what it says my calorie burn is to my GPS (I don't wear a HRM).

One of the guys on my team has a fitbit, and I've told him he's gotta get this figured out for me :)
