Wedding Hair/Makeup at the Aveda Institute?

I am toying with the idea of going to the Aveda Institute for my wedding day hair and makeup. link

We're trying to be budget-friendly. . . but I don't want to look bad in the photos that I'm splurging on. . . . so I ask you, wise women, is this totally crazy?

edited to fix crazy link.

I love the Aveda Institute! I go there for facials and they have been awesome. I've had some other services though that have been hit or miss. I wonder if you called and found out if a particular student could do a trial for you and try to schedule with that same student for your wedding? I think each "class" is there for six months at a time?

Also--check out the Michael Anthony salons (locations at North Ave, Belmont, and State St.). I used to get my haircut at the one on Belmont and I had a junior stylist whose prices started cheaper than senior stylists. I'm sure there are other salons in the city that have "junior" stylists too who might have cheaper prices.

I don't think it is crazy! I am a stylist myself and when I was in school there were a few students that could do rockin updos. Be careful though, as the pp said the students are only on the floor for a limited amount of time so I would maybe check with the instructors first and see. Here is another thought. If you find a stylist there that you like and they are no longer on the floor, ask if they would be able to make a special exception for a wedding or ask the stylist to possibly do it outside of school.

I'd vote for this being not such a good idea. PP is correct. Aveda stylists don't stay on the floor long, so it would be likely impossible to do a trial run or to really develop a relationship with someone. Also, my experience with hair cuts at the institute are that they take for-ev-er. I would assume an updo would be even worse.

Instead, I would go with a place like Ladies & Gentlemen in the Loop or a Michael Anthony Salon - mainly because these places have new and "junior" stylists. They've graduated recently so their prices are much lower than the master stylists, but they're definitely going to stay put where you want them for a time and you'll be able to get a relationship going.

As far as makeup, the most cost effective plan is to DIY. There are amazing YouTube videos on wedding makeup that I've been watching religiously and I feel great about doing it myself. Heck, even Kate MIddleton did her own makeup!

I decided to go with Blueberry Moon. They are an Aveda salon (not the school) on the northside where I've gotten my hair cut before. We're using their junior stylists and heir prices are pretty reasonable (80 for hair, 50 for bridal makeup, 35 for BM makeup). I'm psyched :) Thanks for the advice though, ladies!!
