invitations with no inner envelope, wtf?

So I picked out my favorite set of Brides invitations from Michaels, in the colors that match my wedding. I guess I didn't pay enough attention to what it included, because now that I have all the boxes I need and I opened one up to start thinking about whether I will print or use wrap around labels I realized there is NO INNER ENVELOPE!
The package includes the outer envelope which is kind of thin, and very large (like size A9 I think),
The invite paper/ribbon - dimensions are very close to the size of the envelope
The RSVP card
Return envelope
(no enclosure included, but not needed as we have one venue)

Have you ever received an invite without an inner envelope? Is that totally inappropriate? How should I go about rectifying this situation.. I don't want to return the set, I really love the style.

Inner envelopes aren't a requirement. I think they are nice to add and add formality and clarity (about who is invited), but if your set doesn't come with them, that is fine. I think it would be more trouble than it is worth to track down the right size envelopes to use as inner envelopes that would fit with your existing envelopes. You aren't breaking any invitation rule by not having inner envelopes. Plenty of people don't use them.

Don't fret. If you love the invitation package, keep it. I have actually never received a wedding invitation that DID have an inner envelope.

I think it's much more common to get an invitation without an inner envelope than with it these days. Most people just see it as a waste of paper, and its original purpose disappeared once the Postal Service started using automobiles instead of horses.

Alternatively I am considering lining the large envelope with gold foil or paper to give it some more strength and interest.

No, I have never received a wedding invitation without an inner envelope, however I notice recently that it is becoming optional. We plan to use inner envelopes, but if we were having a casual, garden (or backyard) affair, we might not.

I have been invited to 6 weddings in the last year.... not one of the invitations has had an inner envelope. That is kind of a dead trend....

Don't worry about it!

If you love there invitations it doesn't matter!

like PP's I don't think 2 envelopes are really necessary, but if you really want another envelope, use the one you have an an inner envelope, and buy outer envelopes elsewhere. There are tons of places to buy them online.

We bought a DIY kits like that from WM and they did not have inner envelopes. Don't worry about it, like pp said, it is just a waste of paper and they are slowly disappearing. And just think on all the postage it will save you.

No worries. I like inner envelopes or pocketfolds or SOMETHING of the sort, personally, but it's fine to NOT have them, so long as you're not having a Black Tie or White Tie affair. If your wedding is uber formal, you really need invites that convey that. It's a real rarity to have a truly Black Tie wedding, though.

Like pp's said, no worries.

We didn't have an inner envelope. I lined my own envelopes (using scrapbook paper) and it really helped add something "extra" to them. GL!

Definitely don't have to have them, but another thing about not having an inner envelope that no one has mentioned - if you're inviting people with a guest, put a little note in with the invitation that tells them they can bring someone. I thought it was really odd when I got an invitation and "My Name And Guest" was on the outer envelope.

I just ordered mine online and specifically did not choose an inner envelope. It's a extra unneeded cost, makes the invitation heavier which adds to the cost of postage and it just gets thrown out any way. 99% of people don't oooh and ahhh about invitations anyway so IMO spend your money on something that will have more of a lasting impact.

Thanks for the advice ladies... I am going to know the names of all guests - (only inviting significant others) so we will avoid that issues by being able to put their name on the outer envelope.
hz80408 - I think I am going to line with gold scrapbook paper as well - did you use something simple like a glue stick or spray adhesive?

I agree with squirrly and annie. The invitation is the first "impression" people will have of your wedding, so you do want to kind of convey the formality of the event with your invitation. Extra envelopes are also an extra cost and just creates more trash. I got boxed sets like yours on clearance and compared prices to ordering nicer stationery. I realized the price difference is the same as a cocktail at our venue, and I figured most people would rather have me buy them a drink than a pretty wedding invitation with outer envelopes!
