VERY stressed over choosing a DJ for wedding

Hi everyone,
I am really getting stressed about choosing a DJ for my Oct 2011 wedding.  I  have been reading reviews like crazy, and watching clips on youtube, but it seems that most reviews are from post wedding brides (understandably, of course)  - but how many people are really going to think their own DJ stunk?
I am very concerned about getting a cheesy loudmouth DJ- but I also dont want a quiet geek who isnt going to get people dancing.  I also dont want one who plays too loud- or one that gets super clubby at 10pm (I know you can tell them not to- but many have a mind of their own!)  I guess this is just more of a vent... but of course if you think you can help... Id love to hear it! Thanks.

We booked Bob Albrecht from Fantasy Productions for our wedding last year, on the recommendation of a NJ Knottie. We were very happy with him. My review is here: http://mbcdd.weebly.com/vendors.html

I don't see why someone wouldn't admit they didn't like their DJ, or had problems with them. I've heard many negative reviews about a variety of DJs from people that had used them. I think that's the best way to get feedback. What companies are you considering? Maybe we can give feedback on them so you can see if they are your style. I really wouldn't take recommendations from people who haven't used the company yet, because they don't have personal experience with them yet. And I've heard stories about some companies saying one thing and doing another (the day of the wedding).

Very few people on here have actually said that their DJ wasnt good at their own wedding.  Yes, people will write about bad service, but Im interested in finding out which DJs are frustrated performers who turn into a loud mouths once they are handed a mic, and which ones are calmer and not cheesy, but still fun.

We are using Paul Anthony Entertainment. I feel EXACTLY the same way you do and told that to my wedding planner, and Paul is who she recommended. He is a little pricier but we are hoping it's worth it.

I actually based getting my DJ on experiences at weddings I had been to.  We had gone to several weddings in the years leading up to our wedding and saw Premier Entertainment several times before our wedding and loved them and that is why we chose them.    And they didn't disappoint!

Goaliegirl- that is a great idea- you are smart to have taken note of the DJ's names/companies at past weddings. I think that is the BEST way to judge- as a guest at a wedding. That is what I meant by saying that no bride ia going to say that their DJ sucked, but a guest might! If you saw your DJ perform - while you were a guest- then you can be sure he's good!
Thanks everyone!  I need these DJ nightmares to stop.

We are now having a band, but originally had booked a DJ and wanted the exact same things you did. Check out Elite Sound Entertainment, anyone I have heard of who has used them has been extremely happy- they were even at one of the weddings on "Four Weddings" and the guest brides all liked them too :)

We actually didn't like any of the djs we saw at previous weddings, which is why I struggled to find one.  I looked here for recommendations and Heather and Jamie both suggested Danny C.  He was great with communicating during the entire planning process and did a fantastic job!  http://www.dannycentertainment.com/

Your best bet is to ask a few people who they used, collect reviews and make an informed decision.  People have different tastes -- some people consider DJs on the mic cheesy - others don't.  Some think 3 DJs at your event is cheesy, others want 1 DJ/MC only.  its all a matter of taste.  So ask 20 people and you'll get 20 different reviews.

If you are looking for a non-cheeseball company, Carol Moore with A Starry Night (based in Manhattan, will come to NJ) is great, as is Popshop DJs, Expressway Music, DJ Gaza and Gotham DJ.

Elite Sound is great (they DJ'd a friends wedding at my suggestion) but a little more of a "club DJ" -- they talked a bit on the mic, too.  And had spikey hair.  And were the first ones at the dessert table.  But everyone danced and we had a GREAT time.

The ones above I mentioned are a bit more low key, don't talk as much, lean more indie rock, if thats your thing.

We used Johnny from Elite Sound Entertainment and LOVED him. Basically you can choose your level of involvement that you want from the DJ and MC... we wanted minimal. You choose which genres you want played, and they will not play anything you don't want them to play. Not cheesy at all.

We used Izzy from Majestic Entertainment (he used to be Viva Events, but they just merged) for the same reasons you mentioned. I didn't want a fistpumping wedding with some obnoxious guy straight off the Jersey Shore. We loved working with Izzy. He was fun, but not over the top and kept things elegant, but upbeat. I was worried about booking him at first because the DJ was the one vendor that we booked without a reference, but I'm so glad we booked him. He ended up being one of our favorite vendors! And I'm not one of those people that thinks all my vendors were perfect! My photographer, who came very highly recommended was just EH and the florist... just eh. But I would DEFINITELY recommend Izzy!

I'm using Elite Sound Ent.  One of the emcee's (will be mc'ing my wedding) is an aquaintance... They are a little pricer but by the reviews on other wedding websites and from ppl I know- I have full faith!

I also got my photo booth through them :)

were using craig scott entertainment. i have read a lot about them and many people i know have heard others rave about them. i struggled with it too, but you get to tell them what to play and what not to play. if they have the experience they should easily be able to do what you want them to do. also, when you talk to the person that is going to be your dj you'll know if they understand what you want. when we met our djs we just instantly felt we liked him and that he knew exactly what we wanted.

we are using elite entertainment in eatontown and after looking at their videos we have chosen Jay Thompson for the same reason.  we want someone who is energetic without yelling and someone who isnt going to say i want everyone on the dance floor 500 times.  they have been great and are available 24/7 when it comes to returning emails and calls.  Also they have the online plannner so u can control what music does and doesnt get played!  good luck!!!
