Wedding reception menu

Hey girls!

We are planning a budget wedding and I'm having a hard time deciding on what foods to serve at the reception. His Father and stepmother have bought a pig to roast that will be stuffed with keilbasa and saurkraut.  His uncle has offered to make his well-known potato salad.  This leaves me to figure out the rest of the dishes. I was thinking maybe chips, a veggie tray, and maybe a fruit salad.

Do any of you ladies have ideas? What are all of the foods that are available through your venue? I want to make sure I am not forgetting anything and have some food options for everyone, but not too expensive or require too much work!

Thanks!!

Re: Wedding reception menu

  • Do you have an option for non sauerkraut eaters? I hate it and if my food had been stuffed with it and the flavours "rubbed off" I would be very put off. Plus the smell pretty much makes me throw up.

Could you do a sandwich or wrap trays?

  • What about a pasta salad?  Although, the potatoe salad might work in place of something like that.  My favorite go to side is always mac and cheese :)

  • Achiduck - you bring up a very good point! I'll have to figure out something even if it is little sliders for another option.

Ystaalenburg - FI Stepmom makes a great homemade mac and cheese! Thats a great idea!

I was just searching for side items and condiments and found cornbread. Thats a must! Condiments are puzzling me a little more though.

Ditto this.  I'm a picky eater and would probably not eat much of the pig if it had sauerkraut, although I would just eat all salads and such.  It might be good to have another option too.  Fruit salad for sure!

  • Chips and pretzels.  They are my go to munchie snack.

  • What about a vegetarian option? I would want something more substantial than potato salad and veggies if I were a vegetarian.
  • I am also a picky eater and I hate sauerkrat...but you are cooking the whole pig? I dont think it will flavor ALL of it strongly, but if I got a taste of it...I would not be happy. Sorry to be down, but there are a lot of people who dont like it. I would almost say cook that seperately. Put pineapple or apple inside...yummy flavor and juicy. I loved smoke pig.

I like the idea of pasta salad or a macaroni salad. I would eat both that and the potato salad for sure. Mac and Cheese was also mentioned...yum. What about some beans?! I want to come to your wedding. I am drooling already!! haha

  • Maybe baked beans as a side?  I agree with having a vegetarian option like maybe pasta with pesto or a different kind of sauce.
  • Mmmm. Baked beans!!

So here's my thoughts from this thread:

Pig with some sort of stuffing (explore other options)
    Potato salad
Pasta Salad OR Mac & Cheese
    Chips & Salsa
    Baked Beans
    Vegetables with dip
    Corn Bread

Think thats enough options?! Honest opinions please :)

I think that sounds awesome!  Not too much but enough to satisfy everyone.  I do agree about using a different flavor for the pig.  Something that is more suitable to everyones tastes.

I think it looks good!  I think I'd do a simple tossed salad instead of veggies with dip or both.
  • Were doing traditional southern BBQ with cole slaw baked beans potato salad. We aren't having any options. Were also doing the food ourselves. Most people in the south grew up on this food..I wanted the food to be southern style so that's what were doing!

<div>This is the menu I'm stating now, but I totally know what you are saying. With doing the food ourselves, it might not end up with all of that because I might just be too busy or too stressed to get it all together! lol</div>

  • My dad refused to pay for an actual caterer (and I completely understand!!) since the cheapest ones in our area are around $20 a head and we sooooo do not have the money for that in our budget. What we've done is found a local, absolutely delicious BBQ place! If you order it and pick it up, it's a decent bit less per person, but you have to get chafing dishes, worry about if it will run out, rent extra tables, etc. and if you pay extra they serve it, set it up, bring the dishes, bring their own tables, and provide lemonade and tea. We are going to have pulled pork, pulled chicken, baked beans, and potato salad. We're trying to figure out a vegetarian option we can do ourselves, though.

  • you mentioned sliders, what if you got some hamburgers and some veggie burgers and buns? Get some bbq sauce and some people can have bbq pork sandwiches.
