BM Dress Poll

Beware:  There are a lot of pictures..

This is my dress:  I'll be adding a tiny beaded belt that will be sewn in up to the corset.  It is made of a silk chiffon.

Bridesmaids dresses will be Marine if its a DB dress or Navy if its an AA

Dress 1.  This is the one that I want them to wear. I think it would compliment all of their shapes the best.  They range from 95lbs-size 20.

Dress 2: I feel like this might be too clingy on the belly.

Dress 3:
This is my second favorite

Dress 4:

Dress 5:

Dress 6:

Dress 7:

Dress 8:
This would be 100% navy.  Not two toned

Dress 9:

This is the one they are in love with.  I think it is way to fancy to be with my dress and the material doesn't look right.

Re: BM Dress Poll

  • I didn't vote, because I think when you have BMs of all sizes they should choose a dress that best fits their body.  If you choose the designer and fabric, they choose a dress.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • are any of your girls busty? if so - that would be a major factor. all of mine are and i'm not - so it's something that they were thinking of and i wasn't...we went with a halter and spaghetti strap criss cross back that they could still wear a regular good supported strapless bra. the other thing to think of is you dont want to get the dresses in material that will clash in pics with your dress. i did however vote for #5 - i think that would work well for most out of your choices.

  • I voted #2, if I could vote for a second it would be for #3, your second favorite. While the first one is beautiful, I used to wear a size 16/18 and I found that anything with pleats (especially in the front or along the hips) made me look wider or gave me (more of) a belly. Dresses always look different in person, and on a person, so if you love it have them all try it on and then decide :) I voted 2 b/c, while I feel satin sometimes shows all flaws, I think the way it is draped may cinch the waist and flatter it. Again, try it on. #3 is nice b/c it is a classic A-Line and that usually nice on everyone.

If you don't like the last one and don't feel it is the right look for your wedding, just tell them that. Its your wedding, you have the last word (but at the same time I think they should have some input) :)
  • I voted for the one they love, because I think they should be comfortable. I think any dress you pick will go well with your dress.

  • Just so you know, dress 4 makes a girl look REALLY wide.  We tried those on for my friend's wedding and I looked hideous, I wish I had the picture still.  Her sister is a size 18 and it was just not flattering at all.  We ended up going with something that looks a lot like your #7.  It wasn't my choice and it wasn't most flattering on her sister, IMO, but its the one she wanted.

As PP said, it might be best if you pick a designer, length, color and fabric and let them just pick their own style.  A size 2 and a size 20 are going to have a really hard time finding one dress to flatter both of them.  In our case, the bride was dead set on having identical dresses and I just thought it was mean to the smaller girls to make them wear an unflattering sheath dress and it was unflattering on the larger girls because it honestly looks like a big cover up.  I think 2, 3 and the last one re the best fits-all shapes.  Can you find the last one that they really like in a chiffon?  We found a satin dress that could be made chiffon, I think it was AA.

  • If they are busty that is a huge issue, myself being a busty lady empire waisted dresses are not very flattering.

If so I would go with 2 or 4. But that is a ton of dress options I would make 2 lists for them to try on when you are going to the store. List A their favorite, your favorite and 2 that you like the 2nd/3rd/4th best. And if all of those are no go then go to list b.

  • I think the first dress looks too much like your wedding dress so I wouldn't choose it.  Scanning down the dresses you've chosen versus the one they like....  They all look more like what you would want to wear.  The divergence in style with the one they chose tells me they like that style better.

As a size 18, I hate strapless dresses, especially since I'm busty.  I like sleeves because those dresses make my arms look bigger.

I think you should pick a material and colour and designer, then let them choose.  They should feel comfortable, and with that range of body shapes and sizes, it's very hard to find a size everyone genuinely likes.  I know I've purposely gone along with the crowd before because I didn't want to "ruin things as the fat girl".

LOL.  This made me laugh.  I have too.  I go between a 14-18 all the time.  I have 3 skinny friends, one thick friend and the rest of us are in the teens for size.  We have always worn the same dresses in weddings, but I don't think any of us looked bad and we were always comfortable in them.  3 of the 6 have bigger chests and those are the ones that love when their chests look huge.  Almost a D but they wear push up bras still.

I guess I'm the opposite when it comes to the cut of dresses.  I always feel like strapless and empire waists help hide flaws.  I also do wear shawls a lot though.

I am trying to find a dress that looks good on all of them.  I have never liked having a bunch of different dresses together.  I haven't found any inspiration pictures that even remotely look good to me.  I think if we had to do different styles I would only agree to having 3 of one type and 3 of the next type.
  • I agree with PPs that there are other factors to consider, like whether they are busty or not. I also agree that you might be best if they are all that different to let them pick their own if you give them a colour/fabric and they are all ordering from one place (so you know that colours match if that's a concern)
  • Dress #2 is very similar to the dress that my girls are wearing.  Like you, I have 6 girls who range in size from a 2 to a 20.  I went in thinking that they would all pick their own dresses because of the size and age ranges (13-40) and ultimately they all decided on the same dress.  The rouching around the waist on that dress really hides any "extra" and sinches in the waist very nicely.  Every girl is different though and every body shape is different.

I doagree with other girls that the pleating isn't going to flatter everyone.  I'm generally a size 10 or 12 and I don't care for pleating because I feel like it adds bulk in areas that I don't want it.

It is your wedding but they will be the ones wearing the dresses so if they're not comfortable it will show in your pictures. I'm sure whatever you and your girls decide on will be beautiful.

  • #3 gets my vote!
  • My girls are wearing dress number 2! It's actually *very* figure flattering, but I want to warn you that it's a little poofy. I'm wearing a giant freaking ballgown so this was okay for me. I'm seeing your girls in more of a straight dress so they dont out-poofy you. Maybe dresses 1,3,7,9?

  • I love number 2 - but I'd say #1 might be a bit more flattering for most women.

  • I voted number 7 because I wore that dress in my brother's wedding and it was extemely comfortable and very firgure flattering for all sizes. she had from size 4 - 18 I would say and everyone looked good in my opinion. I will post a picture of us all.

  • I voted 7 (especially after seeing PPs pictures). I think it just would look flattering on everyone. Why not pick a couple and let them decide which they like better?
  • I can't really help you much because my two favorites from AA for MY bridesmaids are #1 (your favorite) and their favorite!  However, at the end of the day, I'm gonna go with your choice for two reasons:
    1.  You're the bride
    2.  Your dress is chiffon.  I don't think it's appropriate for bridesmaids to wear a more formal fabric (satin) than you.
I'd just say you really love the first one, and that as long as it looks alright on everyone, that that is the final decision.

  • I don't think having 3 and 3 is such a bad thing....  Maybe shorten the list above with their input and your own, and see if they can agree on a split?

I wish I could be more help; this is a non-issue for me because I have a BM and Man of Honour, and FI has a BM and groomswoman and the two ladies in our party are being asked to wear black dresses, no other specifics.

  • one of my bm's is a size 20 and tried on a few of these dresses, #1 looked god awful and so did #8. Make her look WAAAAAY too chesty.

Anything satin is too fancy. Let them pick their own dresses in the same color/designer because what looks good on the tiny girl is NOT going to look good on the plus sized girl
