Calling all runners!

TeamBaby was talking about training for a half marathon, and I'm training for the Disney Princess in February!  FI and I also plan to run the local Turkey Trot 10k on Thanksgiving.

Anyone else have any races coming up?  What brand of shoes do you wear?  Any must-haves for running?

I wear Brooks and love them!  Though I am realizing the shoes that are good for running are crap for my Crossfit - there isn't enough arch support and I end up cramping up in my foot during workouts.  I think I'm going to try the 5-toe shoes - anyone done those?  I know Sami's H swears by them, as does my FI (though he uses them more for workouts than running).  I'd be afraid of shin splints, but I think they'll be great for Crossfit!

I also need Thorlos socks for anything over 5k.  Seriously, it's the difference between bleeding from blisters, moaning from sore balls of my feet, and limping from shin splints.  I LOVE Thorlos!  I wear the normal running high-crew socks for normal runs, but the extra-padded ones for the 10k or half marathon so the balls of my feet don't hurt so badly.

I also use Gu for 8+ mile runs around the halfway point - it really makes a huge difference in my energy!  I wear one of the water waistbands for long runs, too.  I need to get a camel backpack so it doesn't jostle at my waist all the time.

Coconut water is my running recovery drink.  Love it!  Though for Crossfit, I've been following up my workout with chocolate milk and a soy protein powder to replenish my body from basically being beaten up.

I did the Disney Princess half marathon last February!  So much fun!  Good luck :)

I have a local women only 5K on October 1st.

We have a really fun 5k trail run on Halloween.  I did it last year and it is really challenging.  The last mile is all beach.  People run it costumes.  It's a good time.

Then I'll probably run the 10k Turkey Trot in our town on Thanksgiving.  Last year was my first year running it.

I just changed my shoes to Asics.  I'll can't remember the exact style at this moment but I love them.  I was running in nike shox (ones for running).  They weren't bad, but they aren't the best for running so I switched after the half marathon.

I did just get a hand-me-down Garmin Forrunner 205.  I've never run with a GPS before but I think I'm addicted.

I wish I could wear these.  I've thought about going to a couple barefoot running clinics that have been held in my area.  I hear they are nice but it all depends on your running style and preferences.  I would definitely give them a shot!

Calindi- I am trying for the Princess 1/2 in Feb too!!! This will be my second go around at that one.  Oh my gosh it was so much fun I could not even stand it.  I ran as Belle and will likely run as her again this year.  I am also running an eight miler in just a few weeks.

I wear Brooks too.  I love them.  I eat the jelly belly beans during the races.  I don't like Gu for some reason.  It makes me gag.

I've tried all different brands of shoes and as long as they're a good pair (not cheap), they've pretty much all been the same for me.  I've been lucky and have been able to train for both my past marathons on the local AF base (they have a 6.5mi marked route around the airfield).  I've always felt safe and have always been able to stage my Gatorade and gels along specific points so I never had to carry anything.  :)

I ran the Disney World Marathon in Jan 09 (don't really recommed it).  It was a very boring route.  The Disney half would probably be way better.  Then I ran NYC in Nov 09.  It was probably one of the best experiences of my life!  The energy along the entire route was amazing!  The only downside is that it's a very slow course.  Even the pros tend to run it about 15 min slower than usual.

The Army 10-miler in DC never disappoints and I've heard the same about the Marine Corps Marathon (also in DC).

I'm doing the Tough Mudder next month. I actually just signed up a couple days ago, so training has just begun. Yikes. I wear Asics. They're perfect for supinators like me.

I don't really call myself a runner, I'm just an athlete that can do runs when I'm up for it.  I usually do a run/walk combo though.  H and I might do a 5k in the morning because it's for a charity developed for a good friend of mine.  It just depends how late we are out tonight.

I've done a ton of 5k's and one 8k before, and that's probably the most I'll do.  I really don't enjoy running just to run, but put a soccer ball in front of me and I'll run all day.

I can wear any sneakers really.  The kind I brought home with me are New Balance, so I'll wear those if I run tomorrow since it's my only option.  I really like Nike Shox, and I have a lot of Adidas sneakers too.  I'm lucky that my feet aren't picky.

Nice!  I hope to see some of you at Disney Princess.  Some of the course is super boring, but they run a really awesome race - lots of water breaks, Gu station, and tons of entertainment everywhere!  The one downside was I am a slow runner (15 minute miles) and there was a huge backup at the Castle when I got there.  I was so frustrated!  It screwed up my momentum.  And Mile 8 is on pavement on the way back to Epcot, and the sun is just rising straight into your eyes.  This year I'm definitely bringing a visor or something to block that out!  Brutal!

I sort of accidentally ran the Rock 'n Roll Half Marathon in Providence last month.  Or most of it, anyway.  My friend was running to raise money in memory of her Mom, so I told her I'd run with her.  Well, after losing my job, I couldn't afford it, and I couldn't train down here in the summer - the humidity was killing me.  But I promised I'd hop the course and run with her for a bit.  FI agreed to go with me, and another high school pal decided to join, too, as a surprise for the friend who was running.  So about Mile 3, the 3 of us hopped the rope and ran with my friend until Mile 10.  Then we ran back to our car, which was 6 miles away.  So I basically ran a half marathon, even though I didn't get the medal!  And it was POURING RAIN!  I loved it!  It's so refreshing to run in the rain, except for the whole soaking wet heavy shoe thing.  I think that's one time toe shoes would be awesome!

Be careful with the 5 toe shoes. LOVE them, but definitely run in them a few times before you go for a BIG run in them. I know girls that have had horrible cramping because they didn't expect the change from running shoes to those. THey are AWESOME, but you will DEFINITELY feel new musicles :P hehehe
For example one of my girlfriends runs about 8miles a day, got those shoes and did a 5 mile run thinking that would be nothing.
Yeah. She was sore for 4 days and cramming the potassium to avoid cramping hahaha.

I'm not a runner, personally, but Fi and I are hardcore backpackers. I hate running...  />_< I wish I could wear the 5toes for backpacking, but they just aren't enough support.. fantastic for day hikes though! :)

Elle- Fi SWEARS by his Asics. He loves them so so much.
I love them doo, but I bought a pair of Nikes (not gonna lie.. totally because they were 1. for crosstraining and 2. hot pink. :P ) and they are my heaven for anything crosstraining like step and combat. sooo comfy.

I love Puma looks, but they just are horribly uncomfortable to me. :(
I also love New Balance like Beach. They watched the way I can and picked the shoe for me based on my walking/running ways.. Soooooo comfy. :)

I used to wear Asics in high school.  Now they pinch the back of my heel.  Ah well!

Yeah, it totally just depends on your foot and stride. I used to adore Mizuno Waverunners, but it turned out that they have too much arch and were pushing my feet farther onto their outer edges. So I spent $150 on my Asics Nimbus and I haven't looked back.

@Calindi-be very careful with the 5-toed "freestyle" shoes.  If you need support, those are not the shoes for you.  I ran in college and still run competitively, and there are very few competitive runners who wear those shoes because of the lack of support they provide.  They're good for short runs because they allow you to strengthen the small muscles in your feet that can help to prevent injury.  However, you can get similar benefits by doing "strides" at the end of a run barefoot-essentially, running 100 or so meters on grass at an accelerated pace (i.e. faster than your normal jog).

I'd recommend that you go to a Fleet Feet or whatever specialty running store is in your area and get fitted for the right shoe for your foot.

I run in asics, saucony, brooks, and nike--I have a lot of running shoes for different purposes :)

I havent' signed up for any races lately, but I'm about to start jogging again now that I have energy again!

I generally wear Asics or Mizunos to run.

C-- have you tried Converses for crossfit? That's what I use for Cross fit or any lifting, really.

Definitely love Aisics as well. Bought a pair of barefoot shoes but am only using them to walk/run my pooch for about 1.5 miles. I highly recommend not using them as your primary running shoe until you have properly transitioned into running with them. Your feet have been used to being over protected by your running shoes for so long that a dratic switch to barefoot shoes could result in stress fractures. Be careful!

I love to run! FI and I are actually in the Air Force Half and Full Marathons next week at Wright Patterson. He's doing the full, I'm doing the HM. We just did the Mudathlon in August, and I did a few 5K's before that, my PT test and I "dirty trail run" earlier in the year.

I'd have to say that my favorite shoes so far are the Nike Free 5.0 and my new ones: Nike Free Run. Under Armour is my running gear of choice. I like the different fabrics and lightweight nature of them whether cold or hot weather gear. Also, GU gels for the long runs, particularly Strawberry Banana.
