Wedding Colors

I tried this on my local board, but I thought people here might have some good thoughts too--

My future MIL is a meddler. I love her, but she is. My fiance informed me last night that she talked to a florist and he says that the colors we chose for our fall 2012 wedding--forest green and wine purple--are "prom colors," not "wedding colors."

I plan to talk to florists and other vendors soon, but I wanted to see if any of you lovely folks had any thoughts on those colors. More, I want to hear that FMIL is crazy, but if they truly are considered "prom colors" then I guess that would be useful to know before we actually, you know, order anything.

Thanks. :)

I didn't know there were "prom colors" vs. "wedding colors". I think you can have whatever color you want.

I think you can have whatever colors you want.  Purple is a very popular color right now actually.

My colours are eggplant and green so NO they are not prom colours!! Hahahah but like everyone has mentioned, what's the difference between prom colours and wedding colours?

What's the difference between prom colors and wedding colors? Colors are colors.

If you like purple and gree, use that. Tell FMIL that it's your favorite color combination and that's what you're using!

Dark purple and dark green were very popular prom colors ten years ago.  I would talk to another florist.

I think they sound wonderful!  I never knew there was such a thing as "prom colors".  Don't they change with each school and every year?  Don't listen to her.  Go with what you want.

Just to note, if you are talking interior design colors, yes, burgundy and dark green would be considered dated (think late 80's to late 90's).  But for a wedding, you can still use those colors if you do so carefully.

But otherwise, I'd say your FMIL is telling her age, lol.  In generations past, some women had the antiquated idea that all weddings must be done in pastels, like blush or pepto pink, baby blue, peach, light yellow, or seafoam green.  With lots of tulle and white wedding arches, lol.

Just assure her that it's now acceptable and quite common to use all kinds of colors or color combos, and brides are not restricted to pastels anymore.

There is no such thing as prom colours when it comes to weddings.  I say this as a floral designer.  Stick to your own ideas, it's your wedding, not your mother in laws.  I've run into this situation many times in the last 45 years.  Bunches Bob
