Money Help

Hey Ladies,

FI and I just finished Financial Peace University by Dave Ramsey and LOVED it. It's a faith-based course teaching you how to budget and save and invest and in the end live genourous lives.

I highly recommend it to everyone! FI and I are loving having the same mindset on money and knowing we're headed in the same direction.

I don't necessarily agree with Dave Ramsey on everything, but I know that course has helped a lot of people get their head around their budget.

Dave Ramsey really gets on my nerves. I personally think he's become too invested in the American Dream & having lots of money. I'm all for having some savings for security reasons, having a retirement plan, & not being in debt, but it's selfish to stock pile money like he seems to suggest. Sorry about that rant I just went on.

<div>I don't know a lot about it, but I think that for people who aren't inclined to living within their means, it's a good way to go.  It's no secret around here that H and I have issues with my ILs, and one of our major problems is that they do not plan for the future because "that's why we have kids."  FIL has expressed that he expects us to care for them in their old age, regardless of the impact it will have on us.  People like that could use someone like DR telling them how to save for their future, how to plan, and how to live within their means.</div><div>
</div><div>I know a lot of people who have been helped by DR's envelope system, and several of my (non-Christian) friends will tell you that the things they learned form Total Money Makeover changed their lives and saved their marriages, so it definitely works, but I can see what Bronwyn is saying as far as it may push some people to the point of being obsessive.</div>

I think his advice is more vital than ever, considering this country is about to default on its debt and we as the taxpayers are going to pay the price for it in a BIG way.

I read his book, it seemed useful, and I've tried to implement his budget plan thing, but I don't have a steady income, so it's very hard to set aside a certian amount of money each month when sometimes I don't get money.

</div><div>Hmmm, yeah we didn't get that out of it at all. His premise is to help people get out of debt so they can live generous lives. He pushes getting yourself financially fit so you can give family money when they need it (as opposed to loaning which can ruin relationships), being able to afford adoption without debt, and other things like that. </div><div>
</div><div>Building wealth is not a bad thing, as long as you realize who gave you the wealth and who can ultimately take it away. It's all Gods. That's what we got out of it. </div>

I agree that many Americans need to learn tips on budgeting and living within their means.  I think that there are a lot of people in our country who live in poverty due to their choices.  And middle income earners are often living beyond their means.  I think it is this line of thinking that has caused or worsened a lot of our country's current issues (massive foreclosures, decline in home values, national debt, the U.S. trade deficit, etc.)  It's good to hear that there is another positive resource out there for people who want to learn to live within their income.

I lucked out with DH. We were both already debt free when we met, and we intend to stay that way. He likes Dave Ramsey's show, and I've listened to a couple of them. It sounds like his envelope system is similar to what I already do with our budget.
