Inter-religious wedding ceremony

I'm looking for ideas for a Jewish/Christian wedding.  My fiance is Jewish and I have not yet converted..this will take place in the future.  He claims we cannot get married by a rabbi, but I would like to include some of his wedding traditions in with our ceremony.  Overall, I do not want a quick 5 min ceremony in a courthouse.  I want it more formal and to feel special.  So we decided to have it on a Friday afternoon, small with close family members and friends.  Any ideas for intimate/scenic locations in Columbus?  And who can marry us and what type of ceremony to have?Thank you all in advance for your suggestions:)

Re: Inter-religious wedding ceremony

  • We are having a Solemn High Nuptial Mass with a chuppah (Jewish wedding canopy) and glass-breaking. We will also sign a ketubah before the ceremony.

theknot hates this, but we might then have a complete Jewish ceremony at the reception. A Jewish ceremony can be completed in just a few minutes (as can a Christian ceremony, depending on the circumstances and the desires of the couple and officiant).

We're both catholic, so we had no trouble with the officiants at the church. My Church is unusual, so we also had no trouble with the chuppah, glass-breaking, or ketubah.

We have had trouble finding a rabbi to attend the reception, because we're both catholic. I don't really blame them for not wanting to come to just add Jewish flavor just to appease my in-laws.

I would consult with a Unitarian Universalist minister. He or she will know the more progressive local rabbis and will also be well-informed of various religious traditions and will help you incorporate different traditions into your cermony. There will be a fee for the church if you aren't a member.

  • You might want to check the interfaith board under "Cultural Weddings"  It is right below the Wedding Months Board.

[QUOTE]Most protestant Christian ministers can marry you.  I am assuming that you aren't Catholic, but they can marry you, too, if the right conditions are met and one of you is Catholic.  Do you have a church that your family attends?  This is usually a good place to start.  Some churches do not like to marry non-members, but United Methodists and Unitarian Universalist churches are always willing.  Expect to pay for the use of the building if you want a church wedding. Most Jewish wedding traditions do not conflict with Christian ones.  Jesus was Jewish, right?  The processional is different, and at the end of the ceremony, there is the smashing of the glass.  Non of this conflicts with Christian beliefs.  Talk to a minister.

    Did you read her post?

Finding a Jewish officiant willing to marry a Jew and a Christian is about as hard as changing water to wine.  (well, almost)

OP, post on your local board as well as asking around.  There are rabbis who will do an interfaith wedding but they are pretty rare, perhaps 2 per state.  I'm sure you can do it!

GL and let us know how it turns out
