Stupid AT&T

Alrighty, so today I went to order the Samsung Galaxy Note through AmazonWireless because it was $100 less than going into the AT&T store. When I placed my order, I got an email saying I need to go into the store and have them run a credit check since I'm a new AT&T customer. I went in, got my credit check, and the lady told me that to get that phone, I would need to put down a $500 deposit that I would not get back until the END of my 2-Year contract. Really?!
It's because I have no credit and have never had a contract with AT&T. But $500!? Anyone else go through something like this?

<div>Yeah.  Everyone else with no credit or positive business transaction history.  It's been pretty common to require a returnable (if you pay on time) deposit for oh.. like the last decade +.</div>

I have surprisingly never had an issue with them (8+ years).  Why do you hate them?

Yeah, I work for a cell phone service provider in Canada and customers are required deposits (anywhere from $200 - $700) if they have bad or no credit. There is an immense amount of fraud recently where people come in with fake ID's, sign onto a plan for the free phone and then go around and sell it and meanwhile never pay for the plan & we cant trace them since the information they provided was fake. The deposits are to avoid this from happening and also people with bad credit from not paying their cell phone bills. It sucks for people who are honest & are just starting out who have to fork over an immense amount of money they do not have/cannot afford.

  • I mean, it stinks.  It does.  But it's not like you're really out anything in the long term.  You get the money back if you're a good customer.

I just don't see what the big deal is.  Pay it.  Pay your bills on time.  Get it back in 2 years plus you've built up some good transaction history.  Sounds like a good deal.
  • I go through US Cellular because there are about a million towers around here so I always have perfect service.  I have never had to deal with what you are describing, but it makes sense that without credit they would require a deposit of some sort.

[QUOTE]or go to your bank, credit union, or other financial instritution and get a credit card.  6 months from now you will get all the credit you can handle.  The best way to build credit is to buy a car and pay it off on time but a credit card that gets paid on time every month is good too.

<div>Yup. This is great advice. I'm not much for using credit cards, but I have a little card with a small limit. I use it to buy groceries and pay it off every month. I like to build my credit that way because I buy my vehicles with cash.</div>

[QUOTE]I concur with Dot. (HA! Concur is a funny word ever since the movie Catch Me If You Can) You need to build your credit. If you can't wait until then or can't afford the deposit, then maybe your best option at the moment is a pre-paid cell. I'm pretty sure I had to put down a $50 deposit when I set up my gas/electricity the very first time I rented.

Ditto Koda and Dot. It takes awhile to get established, but if you start with something small and pay everything on time you'll have credit in no time.

And I've been a AT&T customer for almost 20 years, I've never had an issue.

  • I had to pay a $125 Depsoit with verizion when i switched my line off my families line and onto my own plan. I got the $125 plus interest back after a year as long as i was never late with payment. If i had been late with a payment they would have just kept the depsoit for a year and a 1/2 or 2 years. once i hit the year i was able to have them mail me a check or credit it right to my bill. I would suggest going to other providers to see what deposits they would require. if you can afford it i would pay it, just to build your credit.
  • Heyyyy, where in AK are you?!
  • AT&T did that to a friend of mine, required a deposit from him.  I've been with them for 7 years and haven't had any problems with them, but I feel like the only one most of the time.

  • The only problem I ever had with AT&T was one dropped call! lol. Been with them for many years, so has my fiance and his family. Ditto what PP's said about the credit issues.

  • I went and opened a secured line of credit, because in the end, I'll needcredit to get through anything in life really. I'm also just frustrated with AT&T because they are the only national cell provider in Southeast AK. I could go with one of the locals (GCI or ACS) but the roaming charges are horrid! Just calling from WA costs an arm and a leg :o/But yeah, did the grown up thing and applied for a secured credit card. Besides, by the time I get around to getting the Note, the price would have probably dropped :o)

  • Until I built up my credit I had to put down payments on my cell phone, internet and my utilities. What they are asking sounds normal to me.
