September 2012 Weddings

So. . . We just started planning

My fiance and I got engaged over last Christmas and decided that we wanted to be married by the end of this year. We're just very excited to FINALLY get married.

My fiance works in retail so we had to plan around the blackout dates to figure out when he can take time off so that we can have a laid back wedding. September 8th is our date. We are putting our tax return money towards our wedding and now that we have recieved our check I feel like I can actually get started on planning.

So, where do I start? AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH I'm already having anxiety and I haven't even started planning and that is probably why I am having so much anxiety. Heh.

  • Welcome and congrats!!
First, think budget and number of guests. Then pick a venue and book it. Those are important starting points and seeing as you're starting later than "usual", I'd get on it. If you need help just ask the ladies here!
    Good luck!!

  • congrats! Like pp said, decide on budget and guest count then book your venues asap, and your caterer if they don't come with your reception venue

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • Thank you, ladies! I'm so happy to be here. :D

We have our overall budget but have not decided on how we are going to split it. We're looking at a guest listr of about 40 people. Ceremony site is free (beach wedding) but it's the reception hall that is giving me a big kick in the britches. Most places are asking for $1,500 for the night and that's more than half our budget! I will keep searching. Then on to the caterer. . .

So many things, so little time.
  • Have you considered having the reception in the private room at a restaurant? Usually then all you have to do is meet a food and drink minimum instead of paying for room rental on top of food. Plus, they usually need very little in the way of decoration. This should be very doable with a guest list of 40 people.

  • We haven't thought about a private room at a restaurant. I will look into that. Thanks!

What about a backyard reception? Renting a tent can be cheaper than a reception hall. Not sure if your climate will allow this, but I've been to a couple and they are always adorable! By doing this, it can allow for a more laid back wedding, and therefore cutting back on some 'unneccessary' expenses.

I might be completely off the mark on this one, and i think it's because I'm from the middle of freaking USA and there are no beaches/oceans close, but how much would it cost to rent a yacht for a night? Personally I would love that, but again, I'm a simple country girl so I don't know if this is possible or even something you want.
  • Are you sure the beach is free?  Some states require a permit.

After you divide up your budget (I used TK wedding budget tool and then custmized it)/number of guests/location find a photographer.  Mine is amazing and has been an invaluable resource.  He has referred me to so many other great vendors!

  • Welcome and congrats! PPs have great suggestions. After you book the reception venue, I'd definitely look into a caterer (if the place doesn't have one), photographer, and band/DJ since those seem to book up pretty quickly. Good luck!

  • Congrats and welcome!

I agree with all PP. Have you looked into your local board yet? They may be able to help with more specific venues and budgets!

  • Welcome to the board and congratulations!! Ditto on all the PP, it sounds like your two bwst bets for reception might be private room or house/backyard. If you are gettig married on a beach is it private.... can you have the reception there and maybe set up a tent/awning?
Also have to say @ this stage I would really concentrate getting the reception venue, caterer, dj, photographer in that order.
GL, hope that helps and keep us posted.... we LOVE details! Tongue Out
  • Congrats and welcome.
  • Congrats on the engagement! We are wedding twins!!

  • Welcome!  I'm on the east coast of FL and the beach wedding thing depended on each city.  I know one city was free as long as you had under 50 people.  You had to have a permit though.  Agree with a restaurant.  Weather is normally good then, maybe you can rent a patio overlooking the water somewhere?  Look into a covered patio though just incase it rains or the sun it brutal since it is still a little hot.  Your local boards will be able to help a lot.
