Engagement session?

Do you need to have an engagement session?

No, but it is definitely a good idea to get acquainted with your photographer(s) and see how the pictures come out. I have heard a lot of girls on this board complain about their engagement pictures and feel like they need to find a new photographer- obviously, it's never a guarantee that you'll love your wedding pictures but you'll get a better idea of their style and how all the edited pictures look. Sometimes a photographer's portfolio can be misleading.
But you definitely don't have to have an engagement session- it is just a good idea to do it, if you can.

No matter how good your photographer is, there is no substitute for a rapport and personal comfort level.  These are people capturing your most intimate moments...don't you want to know them and have a good vibe for how they work?  You don't have to do an E-session, but at least meet them and spend some time with them.  E-sessions just give you a feel for how it might go when you have large SLRs pointed at you, and a chance to see how they capture you (giving you a chance to give guidance).

E-sessions let you see the photographers work. A lot of different people have different styles. I wouldn't trade me E-session for the world.
