Getting in Shape

taking another stab at the working out thing ;)

Hi ladies!  More for my own accountability than anything, figured I'd start posting more in this board :)  I got my MOH dress for my BF's wedding (that's two weeks before mine) and after some help (fighting) to get the zipper up, let me tell you, I looked like a stuffed sausage >.<  Unfortunatly it was a clearance item, no returning it for another size, and the larger size would probably have been too big up top anyway (I'm a little on the small chested side and it's strapless). FORTUNATLY however, this is a big ol reminder that I'm really not where I want to be size-wise, and that I've let myself go worse than I ever meant to, but I have time to fix it if I get moving.  Today I took my measurements, signed up on fitness magazine's website to get more workout ideas, and I got in a great workout on the Wii Fit this morning consisting mostly of cardio and strength with a little fun stuff thrown in. My goal is to do a workout every other day (maybe a few ab exercices on the inbetween days?), and get rid of this belly! ;)  My goal is to drop about 15 pounds or so, or if my body does what it usually does, I won't lose any weight but shed inches (I've always been a bit on the muscle-y side) ;) Just wanted to put this out there somewhere! :)  I was thinking of taking measurements once a week, is that too frequent or not frequent enough? Thanks! :D

  • Exercise is great, but what about your diet?
  • Diet could be better, could be worse.  I'm a stress eater, and four months of trying to find a job has taken a bit of a toll on me.  I could sit and munch all day but I've been having a bottle of water nearby, I'll drink some of that, and if a while later I actually still feel hungry I'll have either more water or a small snack. I'm a bit of a foodie and I have a love affair with pasta and cheese ;)  I've replaced most of the regular pasta with the whole grain stuff, my sauces and fillings are made usually from scratch so I can at least drain the meat and try different substitutions to make them less calorie or salt intense. I've cut way back on my soda intake, used to be daily, now maybe once a week, I drink alcohol even less than that.  I don't have much of a sweet tooth, I like the savory foods more, but I know that portion control is hands down my biggest battle.  My FI likes to fry delicious things or take me out to eat, when we go out I try and get salads but they just don't seem to fill me up for long. My mom often has to make two seperate dinners for her and my dad so hers is really healthy and I really don't want to end up going that route, I feel like I'm forcing myself to cut out the things I do like and it would make me miserable. I'm trying to get more fresh produce worked into my diet as well :)

  • I am doing weight watchers and you don't have to cut out the things you like.  I went and bought a scale and that helps big time in my portions.  A lot of people do My fitness pal which tracks calorie intake and that is free from what I understand.  I am fortunate that my mom is paying for weight watchers.  I'd fail big time if it weren't for that accountability.

  • Sounds like your well on your way.  If FI does take you for a night out, and you're having issues ordering the right thing, then you can make other helpful changes, like asking the waiter/waitress to box up 1/2 before it even hits your plate.  This will help you learn to portion, and save you another yummy meal for later.
I would really suggest signing up on MyFitnessPal, too, to take control of your diet.  Counting calories can be a big eye opener, as even healthy pastas can really get you up there, and you'll see directly what the portion issue is doing to your daily intake. Try to keep your fridge stocked with tons of fruits and veggies during those stressful moments.

  • PP had lots of good suggestions on diet. I will address the measuring bit. It makes sense to both measure and weigh in. I weigh in once a week and measure once a month. I think measuring more often than that won't show results. God luck

  • I LOVE working out and have had luck with beachbody.com.  In addition to working out, you must start a healthy eating plan as well!  It is the only way.
