Professional make-up?

How did you choose a make-up artist? By the make-up they use? Price? Did you pay for a trial run first?

Sorry for so many questions and thanks in advance!

Re: Professional make-up?

  • I'm having the salon who is doing my hair do my makeup as well. I picked the salon because they are in my hotel. I'm hoping they do a great job but I'm getting married at 10 am so I don't have much time to go elsewhere.

  • I'm having a DW, so I pretty much had to rely on the girls from my board.  But if I were having a wedding locally I would start by their quality of work, products they use, then price.  I believe you get what you pay for and these pictures are going to last me a lifetime, I'd rather spend the extra money and get the quality I want
  • murph- I was thinking the same thing as far as you get what you pay for. I have seen everything from $185 to $55. That is a huge difference.

  • Since I got married on a Sunday, I didn't have much of a choice since most salons in my area are closed that day.  None of the individual make up artists I spoke to were available, so I had to go with the only salon that was open early enough.  I did pay for a trail run, but it didn't cost much at all.

I found my MUA on my local board and I chose her because she had good reviews and every bride on my local board that used her looked beautiful.  I used her for my E-pics and booked her based on that.

Even though I used her for E-pics, I still did a hair and makeup trial for my wedding day.

  • A good friend of mine is a non-professional (though she was professionally trained), but very talented, MUA and she offered to do it for free. I'm going to insist on paying her, but I'm very excited to have ti done professionally -- I've been doing my make-up the same since about the 7th grade.

  • I did some research and asked on my local about MUAs. I chose the one I had based on reviews, she was the #1 recommended MUA there and I haven't seen one bride that wasn't happy with her. She did both my hair and make up and while I didn't have a trial, everything turned out exactly how I wanted them for my wedding day.
  • I think that it is a very personal decision.  I ended up doing my own makeup.  I think that it really depends on what you will do with the makeup after the wedding.  I spent well over $300 in makeup and brushes for my wedding.  My wedding was 6 months ago and I still use most of the products and brushes almost every day.  So, I think it was worth it to buy the makeup and do it myself.  If you have no interest in using the products again, then DIYing probably won't be cost effective.

I really enjoyed doing my makeup the day of my wedding. Usually, I like putting on makeup, especially when I have time do it at a relaxed pace.  On my wedding day, it felt normal and familiar to do my makeup.

I got a lot of compliments on my makeup.  Most of the compliments came before the person even knew that I had DIYed.  I know it might sound silly, but I feel really proud to look at my wedding photos and see how great my makeup looked.  Ireally felt a sense of accomplishment having done it myself.

If you are interested in doing your wonmakeup, don't be afraid.  I knew very little before the wedding. Now, I really feel comfortable doing my makeup.
