Re: Ireland Anyone

  • I'd wait a few months and go in June.  Even then the weather is going to be cool.  Personally, I prefer the western coast of the country, especially Galway City.  You can take tours from there to various sites or if you want to spend a day in Dublin or Belfast, you can just take the train.  The only other thing I'd warn you about is (at least in the western half of the country) that the speed limits are around 35 miles an hour.  I went thinking I could drive anywhere quickly.  Not gonna happen - and the roads can be extremely narrow at points also.

  • We went to Ireland a few years ago and spent the majority of our time in the Dingle peninsula.  The countryside and the quaint little towns are beautiful (we preferred that area over Dublin which was kind of a letdown for us).  We were there in mid-August and even then, it was rainy and got pretty chilly during the day (we usually wore long sleeves, and a raincoat was a must).  I see you're getting married in March so, like the pp, I'd recommend waiting until the summer if you can.  March might be too dreary but if that doesn't bother you, it might be a good time to visit in terms of prices, etc. (that should be considered low season).  Rick Steves' books and videos are tremendously helpful.

  • Thanks for the advice.  FI and I are both teachers so we can't take off in March, so we're looking at July.

  • We just went this summer and really enjoyed it.

We used a travel agent in Bayonne, actually.

  • I just went to Ireland with a friend in July.  We made reservations at bed and breakfasts on various nights and just left our days open for driving around the countryside, exploring, and hitting some major tourist highlights. I'd have to stay my favorite moment of the trip was taking the wrong path trying to find the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland and ending up wandering through wildflower fields along the cliffs! I really enjoyed just exploring and meeting people rather than doing an organized tour- but we didn't hit all that many of the major tourist destinations if that's your priority.

Another thing to note is that if you don't do a tour and want to visit the countryside you'll probably need to rent a car. Ours ended up being VERY expensive because we couldn't drive a stick (price doubled).
