EE Check!

We just finished our EE. It was awesome! While a lot of those topics and questions were things we already talked about it was nice to just go over it again. Our ADD kicked in a little here and there, but likely there were other Couples there who cut up too. We weren't the only fools. One great thing was it started our first serious conversation about NFP. We talked about it briefly and this time it was a lot better. I just had a question. How many of you have NFP physicians? There are only two and they both live an hour away from us. Is it important?

We went on our Engaged Encounter retreat this weekend also! We had an amazing experience.  It was so nice to have time away from work/stresses of everyday life to focus on our relationship and prepare for our marriage.  Like you and your fiance, we had addresses some of the topics already also but still had a lot of great discussions.

We had a very informative presentation on NFP with an actual physician and have decided it's the route for us.  My fiance's sister went through NFP with a physician a few years back so we're considering looking into getting one and may do more research on our own on the internet/in books.

I have an NFP-only doc and would never go to anyone else now that I know.

It is not necessary to have an NFP-only doc in order to do NFP However, people drive from 4 different states to go to my doc and his partner. They are valuable in helping fix problems rather than medicating and covering them up. I drive 45 minutes to mine.. my friend drives 2 hours to have them deliver her babies. They are worth it.

I would suggest starting today in charting...because it can take a bit to learn, especially if you have any sort of problems that might confuse the charting a bit.

Most other docs that are not NFP only may actually ridicule or pressure to use birth control. This is not always, but this is my and many people's experience that I know.

I'm glad the weekend went so well for you!  I'm really looking forward to ours because it's hard to find quality time of more than a few hours to seriously discuss our relationship.  How long was your EE weekend, total?

I think that an NFP physician is probably good once you're married unless you have health issues that you can determine in advance!  Are you thinking of taking your NFP classes through an NFP physician?  I think that NFP instructors don't necessarily need to be physicians...  although I'm sure having the same person as your doctor and instructing you for NFP is a good plan overall.

i would love an NFP/pro-life doctor, but there seems to be only one in my area, and its in the city which is about an hour from me, and he's male.  i cant deal with a male doctor.

however, my doctor DOES support my charting, etc. and hasnt tried to tell me it will fail, etc.  although i do suspect her supportiveness stems from the fact that i'm now married and 33 - so if i did get pregnant, it wouldnt be a big deal.  i'm not sure how she'd react if i was single and 22.  but otherwise she's a great doctor.

Glad that EE went well! We do our day retreat next weekend, and I'm totally excited!

I have an NFP-only doc and he's great. I was nervous, because I had never been to a male OBGYN before. Honestly, though, it felt so great to walk into an office that was covered in NFP literature, to be asked about NFP and charting on my medical history forms, etc. He also made me feel comfortable and at ease -- and TMI alert -- but it was the most painless exam I have experienced.

My doc is very involved in the pro-life movement, in NFP for our diocese, has a crucifix in his office and is very involved in Catholic life in the area. At this point, it is difficult to imagine going to any other doc.

"How many of you have NFP physicians? There are only two and they both live an hour away from us. Is it important?"

It's very common that the closest NFP-only doctor is hours away.  So I understand that many of you can't make it to an NFP-only doctor.  But there are plenty of NFP-friendly doctors, meaning they will work with you and your charting but they will still prescribe artificial birth control for other patients.

If you are using the Creighton method, you will most likely have to go to a NFP doctor, since this method has a heavy medical component.

Here's a database to search for NFP-only doctors:

I also agree that non-NFP doctors tend to pressure me into using birth control.  The one I saw this past summer said that [all] NFP was archaic, when she meant just the Rhythm Method is (a type of NFP method that is no longer taught since the 1970s).  We have updated scientific methods today.  But it's a common misconception in the medical community.  My FI is a med student himself and realizes this.  Many doctors need a continuing education seminar!

You can point your doctor to a Couple to Couple League or Creighton University to learn more about NFP so they can meet your needs.  It's eye-opening.  Doctors are open to serving their patients!

We didn't go over the NFP at our EE weekend. I wish we would have becuase there was another couple that was telling us about it and I'm interested in looking into it. I would feel more confident in having a NFP physician or someone that is well educated in that area to go over it with me. I think I would be way too paranoid of becoming pregnant without any other type of birth control if I tried doing it on my own.

Our EE weekend was pretty long... we got there at 6 on Friday evening to take the FOCCUS test.  Then we had talks from 7-11.  On Saturday, we had breakfast at 8 am and had talks, etc until 10:30 p.m.  Then Sunday we had breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and were done at 1 p.m.  But in the grand scheme of things, that is a small amount of time to devote to marriage prep!

Thanks! I just need to decide which system to use and I know this was discussed further down so I'll look at it.
I was going to start charting in Jan. After my trip to India because my cousins won't understand it and I can't begin to explain it to them in our language. Plus it gives me 6 months of planning before anything starts (TMI sorry).

Thanks for the link!  As I was reading this thread I was thinking, "Where can I go to find out if there is an NFP physician in my area?" and there your link was.  It turns out that there are several within 40 minutes of me, so I'm going to call and see who might be available and who accepts my insurance.

NFP is hardly ever actualy taught by a doctor--- it takes too long for a doctor's time. Creighton method is most of the time taught by a nurse...but all creighton teachers must be certified to teach it. THey all have the same instruction.

NFP is actually more effective the any kind of artificial birth control. This is because the stats for Artificial is way off....condoms get credit for preventing pregnancy when 3/4 + of the time a pregnancy wouldn't have happened anyway. any kind of hormonal birth control is abortive.... there are 5-7 septic abortions (chemical done by the pill or other hormonal bc) for every surgical abortion.

While you can learn NFP online, or in a home study course...I would always recommend having a teacher.

None here :(  There are quite a few doctors on the list (including FFIL! lol), but none of them are OBGYN specialists.

NFP=yet another thing to go on my ever-growing WR and NWR to-do list. And here I am on TK. Ahh!

You can call the NFP-only docs that somewhat near and ask for recommendations of OBGYN's...usually they have a good community and they know some docs that will be friendly to NFP

Right now I live on the north side of Chicago, but after I get married next month I'll be on the south side.  I'll still be in the city, but I'll be near Oak Lawn, Merrionette Park, out that way...

Ditto on the link thing. Thanks! Unfortunately, my closest person is about 4 hours away :(. And he isn't within my insurance carrier. I take that back - the site said there's one in my city, but she's retired :\.

As for learning NFP (we're learning Creighton method), my instructor is certified but not a doctor.
