XP table overlays

I wasnt sure where to post so i thought I would try the local board and reception. Im trying to decide on tablecloths/overlays. And i have fallen in love with the taffeta crinkle overlays as cheaper than the full table cloths. I just priced out tableclothsfactory.com & smartyhadaparty.com and one has hemmed bottom and the other serged. Whats the difference?  Im guessing hemmed you see the stitch - does it really make the difference or one look better?
Also, I think our table options are 60 round and 72 round. How big of an overlay do i need? Do I just order sashes for color samples. As i just want to order a few greens and a purple. Anyone order from these comapnies - good/bad? Thanks for all the help!

Re: XP table overlays

  • With hemming v. serging, you've got it exactly backwards. Hemmed means that the edge is folded up and that you only see one line (or two) of threads on the outside of the tablecloth. Serged means that they just went around with a serger, and the raw edge is visible down at the bottom. I personally think serging is really ugly. However, if it's going to be down at the bottom of the table, nobody will notice it and it won't matter.

There are also several types of serging, and some are more attractive than others. Here is a link to a photo of hemmed and serged tablecloth edges so you can see the difference, that's a particularly attractive serging option. If you take a shirt (any shirt, really) and look at the inside, at the seams, you will be able to see another type of uglier serging. The edges of the sleeves and bottom will probably be hemmed, with the fabric folded over, so that the edge is clean.

We can't tell you how big of an overlay you need, unless you tell us how large your tables are.

  • Some are 60 (inches) round and some are 72 round. Probably using most 72's

</div><div>Can you get 90" overlays? I'd say 72" overlays for the 60" tables, and 90" overlays for the 72" tables. You might also talk to your venue or table rental place about which will work better.</div><div>
</div><div>Out of curiosity, are the overlays really cheaper than renting tablecloths? I don't know what's available in your area, but I can definitely rent table cloths from my table and chair rental place, and I don't think it was that expensive: $2 per cloth or something?

</div><div>ETA: that's assuming that you don't have plain white tablecloths on the tables. I think if you have white tablecloths underneath you are supposed to match the overlay size to the table size.</div>
  • My venue provides white, ivory or black table cloths in the price. The rental place i went to was something like $25/$30 per tablecloth. Its because of the fabric and they didnt have it in purple only green. i ordered chair swatches as samples and also the polyester and satin to see the difference so i can make an easier decision. I dont think i saw them as cheap as $2 thoiugh.

  • I may be remembering the price that it was for table+table cloth. I think they did a super discount if we ordered both together.
