Reception Seating

I am starting to think about the seating arrangement for my June wedding. We are assigning tables, but not seats at the table. The question I have is whether or not it is normal/customary to seat both sets of parents (the bride's and groom's) at one table together with a couple other family members from each side, or separate tables for the separate families. Our parents get along well, and shouldn't have any issues with sharing a table, but on the other hand about 95% of our guests are from out of town, so each set of parents might enjoy catching up with relatives they haven't seen in a while. What do most people do with their parents at the reception?

PS - I don't know if this matters, but we are having a buffet dinner reception.

Re: Reception Seating

  • I've been MOB and MOG.  At each wedding, DH and I enjoyed hosting our own table.  And I'm sure my kids' in-laws also enjoyed hosting their own.

None, not any, of my family is local.  So we see each other, at most a couple of times a year.  I'd much rather spend my kids' weddings catching up with my own family.

"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • We gave our parents their own table to host.  They picked who they wanted to sit there and we did the rest of the assigments after that.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • At my daughter's wedding, each set of parents hosted their own table.  I honestly didn't want to sit with the groom's family because I'd rather visit and catch-up with my own.  I'm sure the groom's family felt the same way.
  • Thanks for your responses! You have good advice. I haven't been to many weddings or paid enough attention to know what is normal!
  • I imagine the parents can all catch up at the rehearsal dinner anyway. We have divorce and remarriage issues, so there is no way seating them all together would fly, but I know my parents love hosting their own table.
