May 2013 Weddings

I feel like I'm so behind on planning! Anyone else?

My fiance doesn't like long engagements, so I feel like I've lost precious time when it comes to planning our wedding! We're getting married on May 4th, so I have less than 7 months to get everything done! I literally have nothing planned or set up or anything! The only thing that I have kind-of set up is that we are going to visit a venue next week. I don't even know where to start. What do I need to get done right away? Is anyone else in the same boat? Please tell me I'm not the only one!

  • Welcome to the board, I'm a May 4th bride also :) The first thing you need to focus on is finding a venue. You'll want to make sure you can find a place with your date available and you won't want to book anything else until that is 100% your date.

Also, get your dress!! It take several months for it to come in and then you will need to get alterations.

Don't worry, 7 months is still plenty of time to plan and everyone on this board is very helpful!

  • You can't pick a date without a venue.  Finding a venue is part one and it may change your date.  I know people who have planned a wedding in 7 months, but it takes a lot of time.

  • Guest list.! Once you get your venue, you'll realize that you can't do alot until you figure out the amount of guests you're having, or a round-about number.

  • Find a venue first, then let that determine your date.  We've been engaged since December 2012.  You can definitely plan a wedding in 7 months.

  • Youre not alone. I suggesr finding an all inclusive venue. That way they will cover the linens, food centerpeices and decorations. Less you will have to worry about.

If you are not very crafty, or just don't want to have to worry about doing things like this yourself, I definitely second a venue that includes these things. Ours does, and it definitely feels good to not have to worry about it right now.
But as PPs said, guest list, dress, venue, and I would add photographer because the good ones usually book pretty quick too!

  • You definitely have time, so don't worry. Besides venue and guest list (which I definitely agree with), I would say please please please establish your budget. Your budget is a HUGE part of your decision making and will dictate what kind of venue you have or how many guests you will have.

Example. Lets say you have $10K budget for your wedding and the venue you are looking at will run appx $7500 for the 80 something guests you may have. This will leave you with only $2500 for everything else and is not realistic at all.

My venue's out the door price (after fees, and food&beverage minimum) is accounting for 65% of my total budget and I am sooooo feeling the pinch and slight regret for selecting this venue which seemed to originally be a good deal.

  • Hi and welcome!

Definitely figure out your budget first and foremost. You can't really do anything else until you do that. Then find your venue (and set your date based on that).

As someone already said I would start dress shopping once you book your venue. Dresses can take a really long time to come in when you order them.

  • Im also a May 4th bride!! something diffently important to figure out is guest list and budget...then what type of cermony u want...ours was simple and we are havin it at my family farm...so free!!!
