Modernizing the Catholic Message against BC

This article was shared on the FB page by someone else, but I wanted to share it with those who aren't on FB.

I think it's really nice to see young Catholics taking a strong stance about Church teachings, and trying to spread the message in terms that are more appealing and relevant to today's society.  "Modernizing" the image of NFP could really help attract women who otherwise might write it off as some ineffective, outdated method.

<div>Found a good article that explores the flip side of this a bit... how we probably need to be cautious about glossing some things over when promoting NFP!  It's awesome... but definitely not always easy... like when you're planning on TTA and your wedding night is smack dab in the middle of phase 2 :o)  Here's the article >> <a href="http://www.catholicvote.org/discuss/index.php?p=29094" rel="nofollow">http://www.catholicvote.org/discuss/index.php?p=29094</a></div>
  • I liked this article, thanks for sharing!  I do think it's important that we are allowed to acknowledge the difficulty of NFP.  I have gotten annoyed at people for calling NFP "easy" because for me, it is not.  And I haven't even gotten to the self control part!

Resa, I call it easy because of the very difficult time I had with it at first allows me to call it easy.

I started charting over 10 years ago. had LOTS of health issues, very difficult to figure out the different cm types...thank goodness for the napro doc who helped solve those issues, and the teacher who helped me to figure out the differences. Now, its extremely easy to figure it out...just took some time.

I know it won't be that way for everybody, but I certainly had several health issues to deal with and eventually figured it out.

<div>I agree... it is a lot simpler once you've been doing it for awhile and get issues treated!  The self-mastery/abstinence part is I think what someone accustomed to not needing to abstain while on the pill might find the most challenging... especially if they have to abstain more than a normal cycle would allow for! </div>
  • I don't think that NFP should be glossed over (it does take self-control and requires a lot of trust between partners and God and knowledge of your body and medical problems only make it harder). I do, however, think that it should be presented as a LEGITIMATE technology that real, modern couples use. I think the biggest thing is sharing the effectivness, scientific study and basis of modern NFP methods. Can it help people who are so called have large families? Yes. Can it help others limit/space children if they are so called? Yes. But neither option makes antiquated, enslaved women like the media would have us believe.

Just the other day, I was reading a book on natural childbirth, and there was a reference to irregular cycles and how "our Catholic friends who use the rhythm method" know too-well how irregular a woman's cycles are. It was infuriating that something that should be aligned to modern NFP in some philosophical sense (childbirth and pregnancy are not illnesses, but what our bodies are made to do, so should be treated medically in accord with that truth) made such an uninformed comment.

For example, addressing a point in the original article, the local diocese's website does include some family pictures (it IS family planning after all), but they are usually happy-playing-in-the-park families, not barefoot, pregnant and doing chores women. The message is certainly different.

I might have more thoughts after I read Newly's article, but I get passionate about this stuff, so I needed to comment! :)
