October 2012 Weddings

When to send invitation?

I have a lot of out of town guests my entire side of the wedding. I know most wedding books, websites, and people say send them out a few months before the wedding, but they don't say if over half the wedding is out of town. Can anyone give me a hand with this one? Thank you!

Re: When to send invitation?

  • Our wedding guests are mostly out of town as well... WE are going to send them out mid-end of May... and we gave a respond time of August 6th, 2012 (via email or phone) we aren't doing return enevelopes etc... saving money where we can

August 7th I will call and see whomever hasn't responded to see what's what... that will give us 2 months to add any other friends/ cousin/family that we wanted to invite but were not able to right away (we are limited) lol as FI has so much family...

Mind you we have given out a few already ... to immediate family, bridal party etc... but the big flux of invites going out will be mid may.

    Our wedding is Oct 6th
  • A good option would be to send out save the dates to your OOT guests and then send your invites two months before your wedding.

VistaPrint, Shutterfly and Snapfish all have pretty inexpensive STD options.

  • Everywhere I read... Save The Dates go out 6-8 months in advance. These are especially useful for OOT guests so they get a heads up and have time to save money plan travel etc. The invitation however usually goes out earliers at 3 months latest at one month. You really want to shy away from sending them so early because people may lose them or forget about it altogether I would think...that's why the Save the Date is so helpful...it makes the invite like a reminder with all the REAL info. STD's aren't necessary but they sure are helpful for OOT guests. I have a guest list of over 200 people and I only sent out 29 STD's. I sent them to all of our OOT guests and then one for our parents and grandparents...and anyone who I know needs to know in advance for work etc.

  • We sent out our save-the-dates kind of early to allow for out-of-towners, but I think we'll send our invites closeish to on schedule, middle or end of July.

  • I vote Save the Dates.  The sooner you sent the invitations out the higher the probability they will get lost, etc.

  • All our guests are OOT. We sent out STDs in January. Our invites will go out 1st week of August, RSVP date Sept 1. (Early but necessary due to some caterer restrictions.)

  • Save the dates for sure.  Then send out invitations on schedule.  Most of our guest list will also be coming from out of town and we did save the dates for everyone and won't be sending out invitations until the end of August.  Our wedding date is October 27th.

  • I did STDs in January, sending my invites out the first week of August with an RSVP date of Sept 22, im getting married the 13th....i dont have to give a final head count until 5 days before so ill have 3 weeks to call the people who dont respond and do a seating chart...
I agree with PPs about not sending them out too early bc people may forget about them or lose them...

I vote STD's too.  Haha that looks funny.

If cost is an concern (as it was with us) you could do what I did.  I only sent them to our OOT guests and I got them pretty cheap from orientaltrading.com

    http://www.orientaltrading.com/api/search?Ntt=save+the+date+magnets

We did the magnets so they could stick them on the fridge and have less chance of forgetting about it.  It was $13 for a dozen.

Then I decided I wanted to jazz it up a little so I bought card stock and removable glue dots.  I cut the paper down to fit in a normal envelope (which I got like 100 for $1 at our dollar store) and printed the hotel info on the cardstock on one side and attached the magnet with the glue dot on the other.  All the extra stuff ended up costing me $9 and it looked pretty slick.

Send STDs. Invitations should go out between 6-8 weeks before the wedding.

B listing usually isn't a good idea, as people may get their feelings hurt. Also, many people do not know their schedule 2 months in advance. I don't get my schedule until 3-4 weeks before. Having an RSVP date of 2 months before the wedding is really early, and you run the risk of people RSVPing one way and then changing their minds.

  • Our wedding is Oct. 6th and we sent our save the dates out in November. We'll send our invites out the end of July. our rsvp date is Aug. 20th. Our hall needs a final count a month before the wedding so this will give me a week and a half to get in touch with those that didn't respond.
