Help - Bachlorette Planning from afar

Good afternoon, Boston ladies!

I'm a former knottie from Indiana and have the honor and slightly overwhelming task of planning my very best friend's bachlorette part in Boston Labor Day weekend.

I'm hoping some of you might be able to offer some destination suggestions I could look into for her night.  To give you an idea of what she's like... she offered two places to consider: Saloon - Davis Square and Flatbread Bowling.  My friend is more sporty than girly.  She loves a great craft beer and a game of darts... a night of feather boas and penis decorations is definitely not up her alley.

Guys will be attending this party as well, so that's something to keep in mind.  I would appreciate any input so much!  I know nothing about Boston... have never even been there (really looking forward to changing that) but I want to make sure she has a night to remember.

TIA!

Re: Help - Bachlorette Planning from afar

  • There is a place right next to Fenway Park (where the Boston Red Sox play) called Jillian's, they have bowling and pool. I'm not sure how the beers are at Jillian's, but there is a bar called Boston Beer Works about a block away from there which has a pretty big selection. There are also a couple breweries in the area that do tours (I think they might even be free) if you wanted to start earlier in the day, those are always fun!

I also know there are a couple casinos not too far from Boston (Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods, both about 1-2 hr. drive I think), but not sure if that's something your friend would be interested in.

Do you guys need any transportation to get around? I think there are a few good suggestions on limo companies on this board, but I can also give you some links - I've planned my friend's bachelorette party about 2 years ago, so I did lots of research. :)

    Good luck with the planning!

  • I agree with PP Jillian's is a good time. There are a lot of good bars in the area too so you can bar hop if you'd like.

  • Maybe start with a tour of Sam Adams or Harpoon brewery.  Then head somewhere like Dave and busters in braintree (right outside of boston). Another great place to go if she likes beer is Sunset in Allston, they have over 100 beers on tap.

  • Jillian's is good -  bowling, pool, plus bar and in the Fenway Area. You might also consider Sacco's Bowl Haven, which is in Davis Square - if she lives around that area and likes that neighborhood. Then you could consider going to the Saloon she suggested too. Sacco's is candlepin bowling though, so be advised. They have pizzas and local beer, which sounds like a good fit! I'd also think about a limo to take you around town...makes it a little more fun. Also, don't forget to plan some games, b/c that's part of having a Bachelorette Party! Even if she's not girly, this is her one time to really embrace the girly-ness. My friends threw me the best Bachelorette Party recently! Two of the "games" they had for me were:

    1) Buttons with Words on them like "Bridesmaid" or "Virgin, still" or "Best Kisser" that I had to hand out to each of the girls to wear around

    2) Each of them brought me a giftwrapped pair of underwear - some of them with artsy - additions - and I had to guess who brought which. It was a LOT of fun!

    Good luck!

  • Totally agree on Jillian's!  Went to a bachelorette party there and it was great - no penis balloons or feather boas needed.  King's is also a similar venue.  I'm not much into clubs, but I always have a good time at Howl at the Moon which is a dueling piano bar (yes, it is a little cheesy!).

On a completely different note, I also went to a bachelorette party where the Mormon bachelorette didn't drink and definitely didn't want penis straws, so we headed off to Six Flags!  You really can make the party whatever you want it to be and whatever fits the bride to be.  Also, wearing matching "I'm With the Bride" tshirts got us a lot of perks, like line cutting.

Big thing to remember, Labor Day Weekend in Boston is HELL because of all the students moving in.  Since it is such a big college town, the streets can become a nightmare.  A lot of locals choose to leave town that weekend (which consequently makes the Cape a nightmare to get to and from!).  Because of this, maybe refrain from Sunset Tap that a PP suggested as the Allston/Brighton area is particularly hectic that weekend.

  • i completely agree with julibug86 - labor day in boston is INSANE! essentially everyone plays musical chairs with their apartments. LOTS of traffic. the best bet would be to find a place to stay that is right near all the things you want to do so that you don't have to drive anywhere! i recommend staying down by the aquarium. super close to lots of great bars / party spots / shopping!
