Couponing

Does anyone else in here clip coupons or otherwise participate in "couponing"?

I've started doing it out of necessity to save some money while I'm unemployed (although I will keep doing it once I find another job), but I find myself getting so frustrated when I see things like "30 cents off when you buy 3 of XYZ" or "buy one get one 50 cents off" ... it makes me think, "Oh, thank you so much for helping me save a dime."

I'm getting a litle better at discerning what are good deals and figuring out how to take advantage of different stores' policies. Does anyone else have any tips or tricks how you maximize your savings?

  • I'm not going to be of any help, but when FI and I move into together we are going to coupon. He is all about saving money and so am I!

Are you willing to/able to go to different stores to maximize your savings?  If so, collect all the flyers at the start of the week and plan your menu for the week around what's on sale (and match up your coupons with what's on sale to save even more).  You'll save money on your food and by planning your meals ahead of time you won't waste money on food that you buy on a whim that goes bad.

Some stores have coupon cards, points cards or rewards cards, but I'm not sure in the US (or where you are) which stores would be best.
  • Naomikb covered what I was going to say. I coupon regularly. I also put in about an hour worth of time to price check the items we buy most frequently at our three major stores in town about every 3 months.

  • I don't really coupon at all, but we use groupon for date night all the time. It's saved us a ton of money!

  • I coupon casually. I get the coupons from Kroger in the mail and when I check out at the register. If we get the Sunday paper when we get married and move in together, I am sure I will do it more aggressively. I got frustrated with Kroger a while back because they don't accept e-coupons and that was my main source of coupons.

  • I had the same frustrations you mentioned.  Our grocery store (Publix for those of you in the south) offers a lot of buy one get one free deals.  I think you're supposed to save your coupons for when there's a store sale on an item to get the best deals, but I can't keep track of coupons well enough to do that.  Then say a box of pasta costs $1.29 and you have a coupon for 25 cents off two.  When it goes on sale two for 1, instead of $2.58 for two, it's $1.04 for two when using the store sale and coupon together.
