Voting Logistics

So, next Tuesday FI has taken the day off work so that he can go home and vote in our states gubernatorial election, as well as the initiatives on the ballot in MS. I already voted absentee, but he forgot to get that together. Both of us are still registered in the same districts that we turned 18 in, and since I've been away for numerous elections (college, etc), I always know to go ahead and get my ballot.

The question: At what point, if any, do you change your voter registration? Are any of you planning to do this? And, how often can you?

I'm a big voter. I vote in pretty much every election I can, and it would make sense to change my registration when we move (provided we'll be there long enough) so that I can vote in local elections that affect me as well as on a national level. But how long should I be in one place before I change it or is it prefered that you keep residency (and taxes and such) in your home state? I just hate to not vote in local or statewide elections if we live somewhere for 2 or 3 years or more.

when you change your license they ask you if you want to change it. I always do. I've only voted twice.

at least here they ask you

I want you to keep this in mind:
When you change your voter registration, you are changing your state residency.
When the voteer registration is changed, you can get in trouble if you have that registered in another state than your car/drivers license. You want to keep all that in the same state, because that also designates where you pay taxes (if your state has an income tax).
I won't change mine... I just change my address and they mail me the ballots. It's easier that way.. and I like that my state has no state income tax to pay.

Good to know. FI wants to switch to FL after this election, but we really have nothing here, and that would mean the PITA of getting new driver's licenses. If we were going to be here a while I think I'd be ok with it, but I may just wait til we get to the next place.

Yeah, ditto Kendall--I changed mine when I changed permanent residency. If/when you do do it, the DMV usually handles it for you. I'm unclear as to how to keep state residency if we don't own property there though (or have an "address" I guess), something I've got to look into. Though I don't plan on keeping MD regardless, because I hate this state. But that's another issue :)

Question - we plan to maintain Florida residency for as long as FI is in the military because we don't have to pay income tax.  We plan on keeping drivers licenses here, and our cars registered here.

How does car insurance work, though?  I'd really prefer to not have to pay car insurance for Miami forever, and I know they want to know where the car is located as well as registered, right?  Does that matter?

Also, any suggestions on how to get my new license in my new name after we get married?  Do I have to fly back to do it???  (I guess that's probably a question more for anyone who did this in Florida - do they require you to be present to get a new name on your drivers license, or can I mail in the information?)
