Picking up marriage certificate

So, what's the deal with this? Someone please give me the low-down, or please post a website link that has this information. I'm Googling and not finding anything.

I need to call the city where we were married, right? (Jersey City)

Do I need to request additional copies over the phone, or can I request them when I go there to pick them up? (And I request them on the spot, will I get them ASAP or do they mail them to me, or do I need to go back and pick up the copies?)

How many copies do you suggest that I request? What's the fee for these? (There is no fee for the original, correct?)

Anything else I should know?

Thanks very much!

I would imagine this varies from town to town, so I'd just call Jersey City and ask.  Ours just showed up in the mail -- we never asked for it or paid anything.  We only got one copy, but I didn't change my name so I have never had any use for it.

I called JC (vital records office) about this last week.  The are only open 9-4 Monday-Friday so I'm having them send the certificates to me, but they said if I go in to the office I could get them right away.  They faxed me a form that I filled out and mailed to them with my check and a photocopy of my license. They were I think $15 for the first copy and $5 for each additional.  I ordered 5 to be safe but doubt I'll need that many.  Haven't gotten them yet, but I just sent in the form and check on Friday.

I picked mine up where I applied for it (which was also the town we married in) I had to pay $10 per copy. I got two so I can send one in for my passport.

Loco, very helpful, thanks so much! MH is a teacher so maybe he can head over there before 4 p.m. one of these days.

I would say two copies is plenty.

I had to print out an application and send a check. (I probably could have gone in person, but I didn't think it warranted an OH-NJ trip. =p)

My town had this strange rule that the person requesting it had the have the same mailing address as when he/she applied for the license. So technically we had to have H apply for it. I don't know what you would do if you both moved after getting married! (I guess you'd have to put your old address and have it forwarded.)

I think it was $10 for two copies. I haven't used them, haha.
