Help from those experience with putting in their own extensions and coloring them - wearing them in

Ok so a few months back I bought the human hair extensions at Sally's.  I took them to my stylist who said they don't need to be trimmed.

I guess I actually have two questions.

1-The color I dyed my hair (first time ever) I loved but it didn't match the extensions.  I had planned on just doing my roots for upkeep but since then have decided to wait to dye my hair until close to the wedding.  What do I do, when I dye my hair should I dye the extensions too?  I'm worried I'm getting myself into some problems here.  Should I pay probably the $100 and go to the hair stylist and have her do it?  My FI dyed my hair the first time around and he did a great job but I don't want my extensions ruined.

Should I touch up my roots now since I use semi permanent dye and then again the week before the wedding so that I won't have to touch the extensions at all or just dye everything?

2 - This is about putting in my own extensions since I want to use them once in a while after the wedding starting on our honeymoon cruise.  I have watched youtube tutorials but I do better with written instructions.  I normally have curly hair so I would straighten my hair before putting them in and I know I'm not supposed to straighten the bottom layers near my scalp to give the extensions a better place to secure on too.  I also remember I am supposed to rat my hair near where the extension goes and spray hairspray.

This is a pic from when I took my extensions to my stylist and she put them in the first time for me.  I had recently just dyed my hair for the first time and my hair is darker than the extensions.

  • I'm not sure I understand all the questions, but what I did was dye my own hair to match the extensions.  I already had highlights but I just gradually lightened until it matched the extensions perfectly.  But I did this gradually over several sessions so it would be perfect.

I recommend you use a stylist.  And I don't recommend coloring the extensions.  In that pic to me, the extensions look darker.  But either way, a stylist should be able to match it close to perfect.

As far as putting them in, I am not great at it either, although I can wear the extensions straight.  But if I want to curl the extensions, I usually wear a side pony because it's very hard for me to get my own hair to curl.  I have watched all those videos too and can never get mine in as easily!
  • OMG Stephie thank you for answering my post and you did a very very good job :)

Ok I will call my stylist and go see her.  I was hoping to do it myself because obviously it is cheaper but I'm not so sure that saving $75 is totally worth it not coming out right.

Thank you again Stephie I appreciate the help :)

If you are talking about the wedding, I totally recommend you have them put in professionally.  This is what I do for special events, pictures, etc.  It's about $65 here before tip to have them put in and styled.  Plus the stylists can always use the whole box whereas I have trouble putting in a whole box by myself.  I could have never done my hair for my wedding on my own.
  • Oh yeah I'm having the stylist who is doing my hair and makeup put them in.  I should have clarified and meant I will have my usual hair stylist dye my hair, I know it seemed like I was talking about extensions.

I'm going to have my usual stylist dye my hair so they are closer to the extension color.

    Thanks again.
