Looking for idea for first dance

FI and I still have no first dance song and we are almost 6 weeks out and need to decide to tell our band so they can practice.  Nothing has stood out and the only song that means something to us is September by Earth Wind and Fire.  I just feel funny dancing to this song because it isn't a traditional first dance song.  So what was your first dance song or songs you decided between?

We're dancing to two... one in English for a minute which will fade out as a second one in Spanish begins to play for another minute.

Our first song is "These Are The Days" by Van Morrison.

We are 2 weeks away and still haven't narrowed down a song! We're deciding between Harvest Moon (Neil Young), You are the best thing (Ray Lamontagne) or Just Breathe (Pearl Jam). I don't think any of these are really traditional first dance songs and maybe will even be awkward to dance to, but whatever!

Who cares if it's not "traditional"? The point is that it's a song that means something to you guys. If we all did the exact same thing, life would be awfully boring. I've heard of people using Journey's "Don't Stop Believing," Prince's "Kiss," and lots of other non-traditional stuff.

Ours was "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica. Not very "traditional," and we had several older people wrinkle their noses at us, but it was our choice and not theirs. And a whole table of our fellow Metallica-loving friends went absolutely bonkers when the song started up at the reception.

(And, for what it's worth, I've actually heard "September" mentioned as a first dance song before.)

I don't think it matters if it is traditional or not. I think you should do whatever you want. That is what makes it personal and fun!

Do what is personal to you. We used Jason Mraz and Cobie Callait (sp?) Lucky because the words meant something to us.

I think it is fine to pick something untradtional.  My only concern would be that I am not a good dancer (and my husband is worse), so anything mid-tempo or faster would be awkward because we wouldn't know how to dance to it with just us there.  I feel like you have to put on something of a show at that tempo (which is awesome if you can do it), whereas with slow songs you can get away with the middle school dance swaying thing (which we did, and we had our bridal party join us up there PRONTO).  But if you can pull it off and you like the song, go for it!!!

We danced to "Have a Little Faith in Me."

We are dancing to "Forever" by KISS... Def not traditional, but it's my FI's choice and that makes it really special :)

You could always practice with it and see how it flows.. You may be surprised by what sounds and looks good.

Like others have already said it does not matter if the song is traditional or not. The first dance should be something that means something to you both and not just some random song that you are trying to like. Ours was If I should fall behind by Bruce Springsteen. We also considered True Companion by Marc Cohn (I have always liked this song but it just wasn't us) and the luckiest by ben folds.

we like the Jesse and the Rippers version better, so we have chosen that one.  We realize in the future though that if we ever request the song at a function, they might only have the Beach Boys version (and we are ok with that).

Are you also going to have Uncle Jesse's music video projected on the wall? (Either the shirtless version with the babies, or the Middle Eastern harem version with the big pants where he kept tripping over the set?)

    ;)

We are planning on "Define Dancing" from the Wall-E soundtrack. FI did ballroom once upon a time, and we both love Pixar movies... and we find that music to be just beautiful. It has no lyrics, so we're probably going to choreograph a lot of the song.

Then again, I have no problem being the center of attention!

For our first dance we're using "Open My Eyes" by Buckcherry.

Definitely, not a traditional wedding song. But the song has meaning to us.

We danced to "I'll Love you Til the End" by The Pogues.  It's from the PS I Love You soundtrack.  It's not a typical first dance song either as it's just a little more upbeat than the traditional slow song...but we loved it.

We are doing "My Best Friend" by Tim Mcgraw.  That was my FI's choice, but I loved it too once I listened to it.  All I think that is important is that you both love it.  If you both love the chicken dance, then by all means, I think you should do it.  I don't think I remembered any other wedding's first dance, but you will.  Pick what makes you both happy :)

We're going untraditional as well. We are using "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS.  Our other choices were "Baby I Love Your Way" by Peter Frampton and "Without You" by Motley Crue.  Just pick something you both like or thats special to you and fi.  Don't stress about it.  It'll come to you.

we're doing Harvest Moon - Neil Young.
another great one that i would have picked (but didnt b/c it was my friends wedding song) is Here, There, Everywhere by the Beatles.  I love it so much that i'll be walking down the aisle to an instrumental version.  its so sweet and very slow...i just love it.
what about Jersey Girl??  (the Bruce version)

We are dancing to "Thank You" by Led Zepplin.  We both love the words and the band...

We really wanted to dance to an Otis Redding Song like "These Arms of Mine", but we thought the lyrics to "Thank You" were more significant.
