St. Martin/St. Maarten

Hi ladies!  We are thinking of staying in St. Martin/St. Maarten for our honeymoon in May 2011 and I'm wondering if any of you have actually stayed on the island and have recommendations for hotel / resort - French side or Dutch side.  From my search of the board it looks like many of you have only been there from cruising; I'd love to hear from anyone who has actually stayed on the island.  Thanks!!

Re: St. Martin/St. Maarten

  • We are going to St. Martin for our honeymoon in July 2011!  (Even though wedding is in Jan.)  I can't give recs since I haven't been yet, but I have heard a lot of "Stay on the Dutch side, eat on the French side!"  We are staying on the Dutch side in a timeshare that over looks the ocean.  I am very excited!  I hope others can help more than I can!
  • I went to St Maarten last year for vacay and it was absolutely goregeous. Food was great. I stayed in the Pelican Resorts they are timeshare / condo's but I loved it.

I also heard a great place to stay is Oyster Bay ( I think that's the name of it) It has a pvt beach and came highly recco'd.

I stayed on the Dutch side - yes I would recco staying there and visiting the french side.  Good luck w/ your plans.

  • Well I have never actually stayed on St. Martin (only had layovers there to get to another island) but I have researched several places to stay in case we ever decide to overnight there.  At the top of my list are Le Petite hotel and Hotel L'Esplanade.  Both hotels receive fantastic reviews on other travel forums I visit.  La Samanna also gets wonderful reviews but is more expensive.

  • Hi Girls!

My fiance and I are going to St. Maarten as well in August 2011.We're staying at Oyster Bay Beach Resort via timshare (thanks to my fiance's parents). I haven't been there but my aunt has but didn't really give me too many suggestions because she was on a cruise and just stopped there for the day. She said the same thing about staying on the Dutch side and eating on the French side. I did get the Frommer's Travel Guide and I'm interested in going to Anguilla and/or St Barts. Anyone else?
