Cruise in October?

Hi everyone, H and I are looking into taking a cruise for the first time ever in October within the Caribbean.  We're very flexible with work schedules, so I'm just wondering if you think October would be a good month to cruise.  I figure children are just back to school, so it's probably not a popular vacation time like February and March are.  I know October is hurricane season, but I've read that cruises sail around hurricanes... is that true??  Maybe the end of Sept would be better?  Thanks for any input, we're excited to see what cruising is like!

  • That's awesome CMGr!  I can't take quite that much time off, but thanks for the info.  We'd absolutely buy travel insurance, and hope for no storms.  Right now we're really interested in taking Royal Caribbean to St Thomas, St Kitts, Aruba, and Curacao.

The southern islands are less prone to hurricanes and the later in the month you go the better off you will be. That being said as long as the hurricane is not affecting your departure point the captain will change the itinerary to avoid a hurricane. Buy insurance and be aware that you may have to change excursions at the last minute. If you are okay with the uncertainty then go for it!

  • The one and only cruise I've ever been on was during a hurricane that hit one of our pre-planned destinations.  We just cruised around it and ended up with perfect weather the entire week.  They were really good about keeping people informed, and we just didn't book excursions until we knew for certain where we would be in port.

  • I've cruised in both mid September and early November (as well as other months) and had no issues either time.  The September cruise was to Bermuda and the November cruise was to Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Roatan, and Belize.

The only time I ever encountered bad weather on a cruise was in July - and the ship was able to navigate around the storm.  The waters were a little rough, but it was fine.

  • October is a wonderful time to cruise but understand sailing around the storm means you might not go to a scheduled island, you may go in a different order or you may go someplace else altogether.  out of NYC some Bermuda cruises end up in Canada / New England instead to get out of the way.  The seas can also be a bit rougher.

As long as you're flexible, it will be great.

  • Thanks everyone, very excited to book the trip!
