Honeymoon- with the dog...

I just got engaged a few weeks ago.  My first, his second. We're planning on next May, I'll be 43 at the time.  So, things are already not traditional (I'm older- according to my brother TOO old, no church, my parents are both dead...).  But, we have a dog and we always do things with him.  The thing is, I don't think we can find someone to watch him while we're away on honeymoon.  Yes, he BARKS at strangers at the door, in the yard, etc.  But most ppl know he's a good dog, EXCEPT he's a pitbull so now that makes him mean when he barks.  I thought we should just go away someplace within driving distance and just take him with us.  Has anyone ever heard of a honeymoon suite that allows pets?

    We are dog people, too... but like a kid, they can throw a kink in any plans. I would recommend just boarding him. We are, just because when we travel with the dog it's a lot more stress on us.

    I would also suggest boarding him. If that is not an option, look into a cabin honeymoon. My DH and I recently went on a weekend getaway to a cabin just a few hours from where we live and we got one that was pet friendly so that we could take our dog. It was a great time and the dog was happy too :)

    FI is ok with us bringing dog.  We don't feel comfortable boarding him.  He'll be 7 yr old at time of honeymoon and has never been in cage.  In the past my sister would stay at my house (we also have 2 cats) while we were away, but she passed away a couple of years ago.  We can get anyone to go in and check on the cats, but the dog is an energetic pitbull that scares ppl only because of his breed.

    I second a cabin/outdoorsy HM.

    If not, I know Kimpton Hotels allow pets. They even write the pet's name on a chalkboard in the lobby announcing their stay!

    There are plenty of areas with cabins, we just went locally to an area called Hocking Hills (Ohio).

    There are lots of hotels that do allow pets. I know Staybridge Suites off the top of my head allows them; they are a chain. Some local places might as well. The cabin/vacation rental, like PPs mentioned, is a good way to go.

    If you ever want to take a longer trip, Carmel, CA is a very dog-friendly city and dogs are welcome EVERYWHERE. It might be a fun trip for you guys to take with your canine friend.

    We are staying at Barkwells just outside of Ashville, NC. It's a pet-friendly resort and looks beautiful. We wanted somewhere close to the Blue Ridge Parkway so we can do some hiking and biking and close enough to Ashville that we can do the touristy shopping stuff. At the resort itself, we are renting a condo that has a fenced yard and the entire grounds are fenced in. The reviews we read were terrific.

    Our original plan was to board the dog for the week, which is fine as he has been boarded before. If you have never boarded your dog, I would suggest doing a test run of a night or two - but first get some recommendations of good boarding facilities in your area if you've never used one. Hunter gets boarded at his doggie daycare, so we're very comfortable with it and so is he.

    Boarding doesn't necessarily mean a cage. While the dogs at the boarding facility we use sleep in kennels at night (and they're quite roomy), they are out playing all day. I couldn't handle the idea of my pup caged all day either but he gets boarded at the same place he goes to daycare (sorry I didn't see this post before I made my last comment...) so we know he's not stuck in a cage all day. He's out having fun with other dogs and loves, loves, loves it.

    Same with our dog. When we turn on the road to go there in the car, he starts making excited seal noises, and when we get inside at the front he keeps pulling toward the door he knows he is supposed to go through.
    They also send pictures of them playing, which are usually pretty hilarious.
    He doesn't miss me for one second, I am positive of it.

    Starwood properties (Westins and Sheratons) are known for being very pet friendly. It will depend on the property of course, but that's a good starting point!

    Cabin rental is a good idea.

    Beach house rental is too.  I know a lot of dogs love the beach.  The beach houses I've stayed in allowed dogs, but everyone is different.

    I'll second everyone else - be wary of bringing your dog! Hotels often ask that he not be left alone at all, and if he barks or makes noise when you aren't there, you can be kicked out. (That said, some resorts will offer doggy day care during your stay, for a fee.) In my experience, almost all top hotels allow pets; I know that the Omni, Four Seasons, Fairmont, and St. Regis hotels all do.

    I know some of the Marriott owned hotels (there are a lot of them) are pet-friendly.  You can go on their website and filter by "Pet Friendly."  There is a pet fee though - usually a one time charge per stay, but I think that's pretty standard for any pet friendly hotel.

    I have a summer house on Cape Cod that I rent out, and I allow dogs. Maybe look into Cape Cod rentals- it's lovely in May, and before Mem Day, you can usually bring your dog to the beaches!
