I'm a second year; in my program its only one year of classes (well, 18 credits) then your second year is cumulative exams. The second Saturday of every month we have an exam, with either an announced or unannounced topic. Each exam is worth a max of 3 pts and you need a total of 10 pts to be done.
Maybe this is the same as a Pre-candidacy exam? I feel like every program has a different name for everything. Within 6 months after finishing cumes we have our first committee meeting and officially become "doctoral sustaining" students.
